        A constable of the Kolkata Police succumbed to COVID-19 on Saturday. As per a report in PTI, he was undergoing treatment for the infection at a private hospital, where he was admitted nearly a week back. The constable’s death has taken the toll to three as two police officials had also succumbed to the infection.<\/p>\n

        “He was suffering from COVID-19 for more than a week and succumbed to it last evening. His family will get Rs 10 lakh as part of the health insurance of the state government for COVID-19 warriors,” an official was quoted as saying by PTI. As the official said, the constable’s family will be given Rs 10 lakh as per health insurance of the state government.<\/p>\n

        As many 270 police officials are being treated for the infection while 900 officials have been infected with the virus in the state so far.<\/p>\n

        Kolkata had been able to contain the spread of the virus but the number of cases has been on a rise since June. West Bengal\u00a0also entered Unlock 1 and opened up public places from June 8. The government did impose a lockdown later but the number of new cases has been increasing.<\/p>\n

        On Friday, the state witnessed over 2,000 new\u00a0cases of COVID-19 patients. 2,216 people tested positive for the infection, taking the tally to 53,973. West Bengal has 19,154 active cases. 35 people succumbed to the infection on Friday.<\/p>\n

        In total, 33,529 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals. Out of these, 1,873 were cured on Friday. The death toll in the state stands at 1,290.<\/p>\n

        Talking of country, India witnessed 48,916 new cases on Friday. A day before that, the country had witnessed nearly 50,000 cases. India has been recording high number of cases on a daily basis and the latest surge is a big worry for the officials.<\/p>\n

        The tally in the country stands at 13,36,861. 31,358 have lost their lives due to infection. 63.53% of people have recovered from the infection.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
