<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\nRepresentative image<\/span><\/p>\n KOLKATA: The cyber cell of Kolkata Police has started probing multiple complaints against several social-media users for abusing and defaming Bengali women ever since deceased Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput\u2019s father filed police a complaint accusing actress Rhea Chakraborty and her family of being responsible for his son\u2019s death.
The online tirade, that has Bengali women being labelled \u201cgold-diggers\u201d and accused of \u201cpractising black magic\u201d among other things, have forced livid Twitterati to report these posts to the police and the state women\u2019s commission. Several activists, members of the intelligentsia and actors, including Trinamool Congress MP Nusrat Jahan, have also protested against the trolling.
\u201cWe are enquiring into the complaints and collecting information linked to these,\u201d joint CP (crime) Murlidhar Sharma said on Monday. Cyber cell officials said they have already contacted nodal officers seeking details of the social media handles used to post the offensive comments.
West Bengal Commission for Women chairperson Leena Gangopadhyay said she, too, had received several complaints. \u201cWe will be sending these to the police\u2019s cyber cell for an inquiry. Based on their report, the commission will decide the next step,\u201d she said.
The first to lodge a cop complaint was Chandrani Chakraborty, a Kolkata-based psychologist. \u201cI have a friend in Germany who, like me, shares the Chakraborty surname. Some online bullies have been targeting my friend mistaking him to be Rhea Chakraborty\u2019s brother. I had protested when I was targeted. Now, I have reported it to police,\u201d said Chandrani, adding that one person \u201chas been repeatedly casting such slurs\u201d.
Twitter user Sourav Bhattacharya, too, reported the same person to the Kolkata Police on its Twitter handle and drew the cops\u2019 attention to the fact that the offender had even tagged Kolkata Police to his offensive posts, almost taunting them to act against him.
\u201cWe have taken note of your concern and the same is being looked into by the concerned section for necessary action,\u201d Kolkata Police posted in reply to Bhattacharya\u2019s complaint.
Cyber crime expert and special public prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee said such defamatory posts can lead to an FIR and women who feel hurt have the right to seek legal recourse. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
