{"id":1195,"date":"2020-06-16T07:46:37","date_gmt":"2020-06-16T07:46:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/female-athletes-shortchange-themselves-on-nutrition\/"},"modified":"2020-06-16T07:46:37","modified_gmt":"2020-06-16T07:46:37","slug":"female-athletes-shortchange-themselves-on-nutrition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=1195","title":{"rendered":"Female Athletes Shortchange Themselves on Nutrition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"News_list_rdr art\">\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h3>Latest Exercise &amp; Fitness News<\/h3>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: Female Athletes Shortchange Themselves on Nutrition\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/media.healthday.com\/Images\/icimages\/10264.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>SUNDAY, June 14, 2020 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Many female athletes lack knowledge about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/nutrition\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">nutrition<\/a>, which could harm their performance and put them at risk for health problems, a researcher says.<\/p>\n<p>A review of two decades of literature on female athletes older than 13 found &#8220;a lack of general knowledge of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/diet_and_nutrition_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">nutrition<\/a> among athletes, coaches and other sports team specialists,&#8221; said study author Mary Downes Gastrich, an associate professor at Rutgers University Medical School in New Brunswick, N.J.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Other factors included poor time management and food availability, disordered eating behaviors such as chronic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/diet_plans_and_programs\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">dieting<\/a> or a drive for lower body weight,&#8221; Gastrich added in a Rutgers news release. &#8220;Some female athletes may purposefully restrict their calorie intake for performance or aesthetic reasons, while others may unintentionally have low energy expenditure due to increased training or lack of education on how to properly fuel themselves for their sports&#8217; demands.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She pointed out that the problem may be worse with particular sports and activities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In addition, specific sports, such as gymnastics, distance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/running\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">running<\/a>, diving, figure skating and classical ballet emphasize a low body weight; thus, making these athletes at greater risk for inadequate calorie consumption, poor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/beauty_and_body_image\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">body image<\/a>, disordered eating or a serious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/mental_health_psychology\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">mental health<\/a> disorder diagnosis of an eating disorder such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/anorexia_nervosa_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">anorexia nervosa<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/bulimia_nervosa_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">bulimia nervosa<\/a>,&#8221; Gastrich said.<\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/nutrition\/article.htm\" rel=\"sub\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">nutrition<\/a> doesn&#8217;t meet the needs of energy output for sports or for proper body function and growth, female athletes&#8217; bone and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/reproductive_health\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">reproductive health<\/a> can be affected, she warned.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Deficiencies in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/vitamin_d-oral\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"pharm\">vitamin D<\/a>, zinc, calcium, magnesium and B <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/vitamins_and_calcium_supplements\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">vitamins<\/a> can occur from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/exercise\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">exercise<\/a>-related <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/stress\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">stress<\/a> and inadequate dietary intakes,&#8221; Gastrich said.<\/p>\n<p>And these deficiencies can have long-term effects. &#8220;Recent reports suggest that up to 42% of female athletes have insufficient <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/nutritional_health_vitamin_d_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">vitamin D<\/a> levels and up to 90% fall short of the adequate intake for calcium. These two deficiencies can increase the risk of bone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/stress_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">stress<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/broken_bone_types_of_bone_fractures\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">fractures<\/a> and also place these athletes at risk for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/osteoporosis\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">osteoporosis<\/a> later in life,&#8221; Gastrich noted.<\/p>\n<p>She suggested it&#8217;s up to doctors, dietitians, psychologists, coaches and parents to monitor and counsel female athletes to ensure they&#8217;re getting a proper overall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/diet_plans_and_programs\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">diet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The review was published recently in the <i>Journal of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/womens_health\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">Women&#8217;s Health<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Robert Preidt<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2020 HealthDay.
