The decision came after Bengal was missing from the list of states whose CMs have been invited to speak during Wednesday’s meeting.
The CM’s office has not yet decided whether Bengal bureaucrats, too, should give the session a miss. But the state government, officials said, would be complying with the Supreme Court directive, asking five states, including Bengal, to submit a report on Covid-19 management.
CMs of three of the five states — Delhi, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu — have figured on the list of speakers. Gujarat is the only state, besides Bengal, that is not on the list but senior Trinamool functionaries have stressed that Bengal is the “only state being denied a chance to speak despite having faced the fury of Cyclone Amphan while battling the coronavirus”.
“The Centre should explain what it has against the people of Bengal when they face an unprecedented crisis that should have been tackled together. Why call our CM for a virtual conference if you fear her so much that you cannot even let her speak?” tweeted Trinamool MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar. Trinamool seniors Partha Chatterjee, Dinesh Trivedi and Firhad Hakim rallied behind her, making similar tweets, and the party hinted that the state government might respond in kind when central Covid-19 surveillance teams were sent to Bengal.
The Bengal CM was not allowed to speak in the last PM-CMs video-conference in April and she had flagged her concerns then. “We were not given a chance to speak and had to only listen to the PM for three hours. I wish we were allowed to speak because I think two-way communication is always better in sharing ideas and grievances,” Banerjee had said.
State units of other non-BJP parties that have been critical of the state government supported the Trinamool stance.
Both the Congress and the CPM amplified their “Bengal-being-deprived” clamour and accused the BJP of “neglecting” Bengal and its people. Leaders alluded to PM Modi’s stress on the fact, when he came for the post-Amphan aerial survey with CM Banerjee, that Bengal was the only state fighting the twin challenges of Covid-19 and Amphan.
“It is unfortunate that the Bengal CM has not been given a chance to speak at the video-conference. We have criticised the state government but are united on this issue. It proves once again that the BJP is against the people of Bengal and its culture,” Congress leader Abdul Mannan said. “The PM does not listen to our state,” CPM leader Sujan Chakrabarty said, while iterating his party’s complaints about “Covid-19 mismanagement and data-fudging in the state”.
The BJP found itself isolated but its state general secretary, Sayantan Basu, said he saw nothing unfair. “How many times will she (Banerjee) speak? She spoke in previous meetings when other CMs were left out then. She can text or call the PM if she wants to make a point about Bengal,” Basu said.

Source link

KOLKATA: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee will not be attending the CMs’ virtual meeting with PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday.
