The share of patients without co-morbidities dying of Covid, on the other hand, has dropped sharply from 34.4% to just 11% over this period, the data shows confirming experts’ assumption that those with co-morbidities are more susceptible to a fatal Covid attack.
While the number of Covid deaths in Bengal has increased sharply in the past two months — the toll has gone from 405 on June 8 to 2,059 on August 9 — the Covid fatality rate, that is deaths compared to all people who have tested positive, has dropped to 2.1% from 4.7% in the same period. Co-morbidities like diabetes, ischemic heart disease and hypertension may lead to death, need for oxygen therapy, ventilation and longer hospital stay,” Jain said.
Belle Vue Clinic internal medicine expert Rahul Jain. He added that various organ systems work in harmony and specifically the kindeys, heart and lungs have a complex interplay with each other. “One system getting affected affects the other organs by way of complex interactions. Multi-organ dysfunctional state is a result of loss of the fine homeostasis of the body,” he said.
According to the detailed report on Covid deaths that is released by the state health department daily, hypertension, cardiac ailments and chronic kidney diseases are the common co-morbid factors in Covid deaths. Surprisingly, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), patients on dialysis and even those with malignancy – people who are believed to be severely compromised and more at Covid risk, have shown a much higher recovery rate.
This is surprising since lungs, heart and kidneys have the most Covid receptors and patients with ailments affecting these organs are likely to be most susceptible, pointed out AMRI Hospital consultant Debashish Saha. “COPD and kidney patients have been among the most affected as per our hospital records,” Saha said.
Last Sunday’s datasheet indicates that this ‘other’ factor is on a steady decline.
