{"id":13977,"date":"2020-08-11T06:50:15","date_gmt":"2020-08-11T06:50:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=13977"},"modified":"2020-08-11T06:50:15","modified_gmt":"2020-08-11T06:50:15","slug":"simple-test-shows-which-face-masks-are-best","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=13977","title":{"rendered":"Simple Test Shows Which Face Masks Are Best"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"News_list_rdr art\">\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h3>Latest Prevention &amp; Wellness News<\/h3>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: Simple Test Shows Which Face Masks Are Best\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/media.healthday.com\/Images\/icimages\/N95_mask330.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>FRIDAY, Aug. 7, 2020 (HealthDay News)<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to face masks, not all are equally effective, a new study finds.<\/p>\n<p>Duke University researchers developed a way of testing various types of masks to see which did the best job of stopping droplets coming from people&#8217;s mouths, preventing spread of the new coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>They relied on a makeshift apparatus consisting of a box, a laser, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/image-collection\/eye_anatomy_detail_picture\/picture.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"img\">lens<\/a> and a cellphone camera.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We confirmed that when people speak, small droplets get expelled, so disease can be spread by talking, without <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/chronic_cough\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">coughing<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/sneezing\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">sneezing<\/a>,&#8221; said Martin Fischer, a chemist and physicist at the Durham, N.C., campus. &#8220;We could also see that some face coverings performed much better than others in blocking expelled particles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What masks do the best job? That would be N95 masks without valves, followed by surgical or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/plastic\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">polypropylene<\/a> masks.<\/p>\n<p>Handmade cotton masks also stop a lot of droplets from normal speech, researchers said.<\/p>\n<p>But bandanas and neck fleeces like balaclavas didn&#8217;t block saliva spray much at all.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This was just a demonstration &#8212; more work is required to investigate variations in masks, speakers, and how people wear them,&#8221; Fischer said in a university news release. He added it demonstrates that businesses and others that are providing masks to employees or patrons could do similar testing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If everyone wore a mask, we could stop up to 99% of these droplets before they reach someone else,&#8221; said Dr. Eric Westman, an associate professor of medicine at Duke. &#8220;In the absence of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/vaccination_faqs\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"proc\">vaccine<\/a> or antiviral medicine, it&#8217;s the one proven way to protect others as well as yourself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The report was published online Aug. 7 in the journal <i>Science Advances<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Steven Reinberg<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2020 HealthDay.
