{"id":1572,"date":"2020-06-20T03:02:46","date_gmt":"2020-06-20T03:02:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=1572"},"modified":"2020-06-20T03:02:46","modified_gmt":"2020-06-20T03:02:46","slug":"luxembourg-and-who-sign-new-memorandum-of-understanding-committing-flexible-funding-to-support-who-triple-billion-targets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=1572","title":{"rendered":"Luxembourg and WHO sign new Memorandum of Understanding, committing flexible funding to support WHO Triple billion targets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Today Luxembourg\u2019s Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs and Minister of the Economy, Mr Franz Fayot, and WHO Director General Dr Tedros \u00a0Adhanom Ghebreyesus signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the period<br \/>\n    2020-2023 in support of the Organization\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/324775\/WHO-PRP-18.1-eng.pdf\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\">Thirteenth General Programme of work 2019-2023<\/a>. The signature of the new MOU underscores<br \/>\n    the longstanding commitment of the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg \u2013 an important partner in global health \u2013 to help WHO to achieve its ambitious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/q-a-detail\/the-triple-billion-targets\">triple billion targets<\/a> by 2023: 1 billion more people will benefit from universal health coverage; 1 billion more will be better protected in health<br \/>\n    emergencies, and 1 billion more will enjoy improved health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe partnership with Luxembourg is very special to WHO and we are extremely grateful for the multi-annual, flexible funding Luxembourg provides,\u201d said Dr Tedros.<\/p>\n<p>The overall objective of the MoU is to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals through WHO\u2019s work in countries, focussing on three broad areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Achieving universal health coverage<\/li>\n<li>Addressing health emergencies<\/li>\n<li>Promoting healthier populations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By providing flexible and predictable funding to WHO, Luxembourg is effectively helping WHO to be agile and strategic in achieving its triple billion goals.<\/p>\n<p>The new MoU also addresses gender equality in line with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/how-we-work\/un-system-coordination\/promoting-un-accountability\" target=\"_blank\" data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UN System-wide Action Plan on Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women<\/a>,<br \/>\n that enables gender issues to be mainstreamed systematically and measurably into all UN functions and entities, \u00a0and highlights the importance of the Junior Professional Officer programme.<\/p>\n<p>The signature of the new MoU follows Luxembourg\u2019s support to WHO in March 2020 for the COVID-19 response, to the WHO Contingency Fund for Emergencies and the COVID-19 Technology Access Pool (C-TAP), an initiative aimed at making vaccines, tests,<br \/>\n    treatments and other health technologies to fight COVID-19 accessible to all.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read more about how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/about\/planning-finance-and-accountability\/financing-campaign\/luxembourg-impact\">WHO and Luxembourg are working together <\/a>to improve the health and well-being of all people, of all ages.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/about\/planning-finance-and-accountability\/financing-campaign\">Investing in a healthier world<\/a>: Read about how other countries are partnering with WHO.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/detail\/18-06-2020-luxembourg-and-who-sign-new-memorandum-of-understanding-committing-flexible-funding-to-support-who-triple-billion-targets\\\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today Luxembourg\u2019s Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs and Minister of the Economy, Mr Franz Fayot, and WHO Director General Dr Tedros \u00a0Adhanom Ghebreyesus signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the period 2020-2023 in support of the Organization\u2019s Thirteenth General Programme of work 2019-2023.
