{"id":15837,"date":"2020-08-18T09:00:17","date_gmt":"2020-08-18T09:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=15837"},"modified":"2020-08-18T09:00:17","modified_gmt":"2020-08-18T09:00:17","slug":"dance-injuries-jump-in-united-states","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=15837","title":{"rendered":"Dance Injuries Jump in United States"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"News_list_rdr art\">\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h3>Latest Exercise &amp; Fitness News<\/h3>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: Dance Injuries Jump in United States\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/media.healthday.com\/Images\/icimages\/67176.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>FRIDAY, Aug. 14, 2020 (HealthDay News)<\/p>\n<p>Dance-related injuries treated at U.S. emergency departments increased by nearly one-quarter in recent years, a new study reveals.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2014 and 2018, there was a 22.5% rise in such injuries, with more than 4,150 cases seen in ERs nationwide during that time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/sprained_ankle\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">Strains<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/sprained_ankle\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">sprains<\/a> accounted for almost half of the injuries, according to the National Athletic Trainers&#8217; Association.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Before the pandemic hit, we saw a disturbing trend that the frequency of dance injuries requiring medical attention was increasing,&#8221; said Joshua Honrado, an athletic trainer with NYU Langone&#8217;s Harkness Center for Dance Injuries, in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The use of in-house medical professionals, such as athletic trainers, in performing arts studios and organizations [is] likely to positively impact the need to visit the emergency room, which can be costly to the family and can slow down urgent response to other critical care in the emergency room,&#8221; Honrado said in an association news release.<\/p>\n<p>In the study, knees (23%), ankles (16%) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/feet_facts_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">feet<\/a> (10%) were the most common locations of injuries, and were diagnosed as sprain\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/sprained_ankle\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">strains<\/a> (43%) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/broken_bone_types_of_bone_fractures\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">fractures<\/a> (10%).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/sprained_ankle_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">Ankle sprain<\/a>\/strain, knee sprain\/strain and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/dislocated_knee\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">knee dislocation<\/a> were the most common types of injuries, the researchers said.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly all patients were treated and released, with only about 2% admitted to the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Dance-related injuries were four times higher in females than in males, and greatest among those ages 10 to 18, the findings showed.<\/p>\n<p>Only injuries that occurred during a structured event &#8212; such as a dance class or dance competition &#8212; were included in the study. Injuries that occurred during unstructured events &#8212; such as weddings &#8212; were excluded.<\/p>\n<p>The study was presented at a National Athletic Trainers&#8217; Association meeting.
