{"id":16585,"date":"2020-08-21T17:23:38","date_gmt":"2020-08-21T17:23:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=16585"},"modified":"2020-08-21T17:23:38","modified_gmt":"2020-08-21T17:23:38","slug":"air-pollution-tied-to-asthma-in-young-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=16585","title":{"rendered":"Air Pollution Tied to Asthma in Young Kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: Air Pollution Tied to Asthma in Young Kids\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/media.healthday.com\/Images\/icimages\/asthma_nebulizer510.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>WEDNESDAY, Aug. 19, 2020 (HealthDay News)<\/p>\n<p>High levels of air pollution may increase young children&#8217;s risk of developing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/asthma_overview\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">asthma<\/a> and persistent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wheezing\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">wheezing<\/a>, researchers warn.<\/p>\n<p>The findings &#8220;support emerging evidence that exposure to air pollution might influence the development of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/asthma_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">asthma<\/a>,&#8221; according to a report by Torben Sigsgaard, of Aarhus University in Denmark, and colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>For the new study, the researchers analyzed data on more than 797,000 Danish children who were born between 1997 and 2014 and followed from ages 1 year up to 15 years of age. Nearly 123,000 of the children developed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/asthma_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">asthma<\/a> or persistent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wheezing\/symptoms.htm\" rel=\"sym\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">wheezing<\/a>, just before age 2 on average.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers then checked data on air pollution levels at the children&#8217;s home addresses, parents&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/asthma_overview\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">asthma<\/a>, mothers&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/smoking_and_quitting_smoking\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">smoking<\/a>, parental education and income.<\/p>\n<p>After accounting for other potentially influential factors, the investigators found higher levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/asthma_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" rel=\"slide\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">asthma<\/a> and persistent wheezing in children of parents with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/asthma_quiz\/quiz.htm\" rel=\"quiz\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">asthma<\/a> and in children of mothers who smoked during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/pregnancy_planning_preparing_for_pregnancy\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">pregnancy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lower levels of asthma and persistent wheezing were found in children of parents with high levels of education and high incomes.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers also found that children exposed to higher levels of fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) were more likely to develop asthma and wheezing than those who weren&#8217;t exposed.<\/p>\n<p>In people with asthma, the airways become inflamed and produce extra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/treating_congestion\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"webmdlt\">mucus<\/a>, which makes it difficult to breathe.<\/p>\n<p>The study was published online Aug. 19 in the <i>BMJ<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>This was an observational study and can&#8217;t establish cause and effect. The findings need to be confirmed in future studies.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the results suggest that further reductions in PM2.5 &#8220;might help to reduce the number of children who develop asthma and persistent wheezing in highly exposed populations,&#8221; the study authors said in a journal news release.<\/p>\n<p>PM2.5 is emitted by various sources, including power plants, motor vehicles and domestic heating. The particles are about 3% or less of the diameter of a human hair and can get deep into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/image-collection\/lungs_picture\/picture.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"img\">lungs<\/a>, and some may even enter the circulatory system.<\/p>\n<p>Previous research has linked short-term peak exposure to air pollution with worsening of asthma.
