{"id":1683,"date":"2020-06-21T13:47:45","date_gmt":"2020-06-21T13:47:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=1683"},"modified":"2020-06-21T13:47:45","modified_gmt":"2020-06-21T13:47:45","slug":"despite-threat-of-lyme-disease-tick-control-lags-across-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=1683","title":{"rendered":"Despite Threat of Lyme Disease, Tick Control Lags Across U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"News_list_rdr art\">\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h3>Latest Infectious Disease News<\/h3>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: Despite Threat of Lyme Disease, Tick Control Lags Across U.S.\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/media.healthday.com\/Images\/icimages\/tick73.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>WEDNESDAY, June 17, 2020 (HealthDay News) &#8212; Tick monitoring and control is lacking in much of the United States despite a steady increase in tick-borne illnesses, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/lyme_disease\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">Lyme disease<\/a>, a new study finds.<\/p>\n<p>In the United States, tick-borne illnesses more than doubled between 2004 and 2018, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/prevention\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">Prevention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For the new study, the researchers surveyed tick management programs across the country. They found that less than half of public health and vector-control agencies do active tick surveillance, and only 12% directly conduct or otherwise support tick-control efforts. Vector-control agencies monitor pests like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/ticks\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">ticks<\/a> and mosquitoes that can transmit, or &#8220;vector,&#8221; diseases (like Lyme) to humans.<\/p>\n<p>The study was conducted by researchers at the CDC&#8217;s five Vector-Borne Disease Regional Centers of Excellence. The results were published June 17 in the <i>Journal of Medical Entomology<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/ticks\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">Ticks<\/a> are responsible for the majority of our vector-borne illnesses in the U.S., and our programming does not adequately meet the need in its current form, for both surveillance and control,&#8221; said study lead author Emily Mader. She&#8217;s program manager of the Northeast Regional Center for Excellence in Vector-Borne Diseases, located at Cornell University in New York.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers surveyed 140 vector-borne disease professionals at state, county and local agencies in the fall of 2018. They found that while 65% said their programs do passive tick surveillance, such as accepting tick samples submitted by the public, only 46% said their programs routinely collect tick samples in their community.<\/p>\n<p>Only 26% of survey respondents said their jurisdictions conduct or fund testing of ticks for disease-causing pathogens. Just 7% said their programs evaluate the presence of such pathogens in animals (such as mice and other rodents) from which ticks get those pathogens.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Pathogen testing is an essential component of surveillance and is needed in order to understand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/bad_bugs_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">tick-borne disease<\/a> risk to communities,&#8221; Mader said in a news release from the Entomological Society of America. &#8220;There appears to be a significant barrier for many tick-surveillance programs across the country to access pathogen-testing services.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Only 12% of survey respondents said their jurisdiction conducts or funds tick control, with those efforts primarily focused on reducing ticks on animal hosts, such as deer and rodents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Robert Preidt<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2020 HealthDay.
