{"id":1746,"date":"2020-06-21T21:02:56","date_gmt":"2020-06-21T21:02:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=1746"},"modified":"2020-06-21T21:02:56","modified_gmt":"2020-06-21T21:02:56","slug":"5-healthy-steps-to-lower-your-odds-for-alzheimers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=1746","title":{"rendered":"5 Healthy Steps to Lower Your Odds for Alzheimer&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: 5 Healthy Steps to Lower Your Odds for Alzheimer's\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/media.healthday.com\/Images\/icimages\/46083.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>WEDNESDAY, June 17, 2020 (HealthDay News) &#8212; A combination of healthy habits &#8212; such as a good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/diet_plans_and_programs\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">diet<\/a> and regular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/exercise\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">exercise<\/a> &#8212; may lower your risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/alzheimers_disease_causes_stages_and_symptoms\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> disease by as much as 60%, a new study suggests.<\/p>\n<p>Data from nearly 3,000 people in the United States was scored on five beneficial lifestyle factors: high-quality <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/diet_and_nutrition_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">diet<\/a>, physical activity, not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/smoking_and_quitting_smoking\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">smoking<\/a>, brain-challenging activities, and light-to-moderate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/alcohol_metabolism\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"webmdlt\">alcohol<\/a> consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to people with none or just one of the healthy lifestyle factors, the risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/alzheimers_disease_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> was 37% lower in those with two to three, and 60% lower in those with four to five healthy lifestyle factors.<\/p>\n<p>The study, which was funded by the U.S. National Institute on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/senior_health\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">Aging<\/a> (NIA), was published online June 17 in the journal <i>Neurology<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This observational study provides more evidence on how a combination of modifiable behaviors may mitigate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/alzheimers_disease_causes_stages_and_symptoms\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> disease risk,&#8221; NIA director Dr. Richard Hodes said in an institute news release.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The findings strengthen the association between healthy behaviors and lower risk,&#8221; according to Hodes. They also support the value of controlled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/clinical_trials\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"proc\">clinical trials<\/a> to directly test the ability of interventions to slow or prevent development of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/alzheimers_disease_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" rel=\"slide\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> disease, he noted.<\/p>\n<p>Dallas Anderson is program director of the neuroscience division at the NIA. &#8220;This population-based study helps paint the picture of how multiple factors are likely playing parts in Alzheimer&#8217;s disease risk,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not a clear cause-and-effect result, but a strong finding,&#8221; Anderson explained.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s more on the five healthy lifestyle factors that could help your brain:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/exercise\/article.htm\" rel=\"sub\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">Exercise<\/a> your body.<\/b> Get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate to vigorous physical activity. The NIA suggests talking to your doctor about the best ways to keep active.<\/li>\n<li><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/smoking_and_quitting_smoking\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">Quit smoking<\/a>.<\/b> Research shows that even in people 60 or older who have smoked for decades, quitting improves health, according to the NIA.<\/li>\n<li><b>Limit your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/alcohol_metabolism\/article.htm\" rel=\"webmdlt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">alcohol<\/a> consumption.<\/b> According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, moderate drinking is up to one drink per day for women and up to two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/drinks_and_beverages_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">drinks<\/a> per day for men.<\/li>\n<li><b>Mind what you eat.<\/b> The NIA says there are benefits to sticking to the MIND <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/diet_plans_and_programs\/article.htm\" rel=\"sub\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">diet<\/a> &#8212; a hybrid of the Mediterranean and DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/high_blood_pressure_hypertension\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">Hypertension<\/a>) diets. This focuses on plant-based foods associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/dementia\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">dementia<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/prevention\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">prevention<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><b>Give your brain a workout.<\/b> Stay intellectually engaged by keeping your mind active.
