{"id":1818,"date":"2020-06-22T07:44:21","date_gmt":"2020-06-22T07:44:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=1818"},"modified":"2020-06-22T07:44:21","modified_gmt":"2020-06-22T07:44:21","slug":"new-tools-to-help-ensure-a-positive-pregnancy-experience-for-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=1818","title":{"rendered":"New tools to help ensure a positive pregnancy experience for women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<h2>WHO\u00a0provides practical steps to help\u00a0countries adapt global guidance\u00a0on antenatal\u00a0care\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Governments\u00a0can\u00a0help to\u00a0save lives\u00a0and improve every woman\u2019s\u00a0and adolescent girl\u2019s experience of pregnancy\u00a0by updating their national guidelines\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/9789241549912\">WHO\u00a0recommendations on antenatal care<\/a>.\u00a0For\u00a0WHO recommendations\u00a0to be effective\u00a0however,\u00a0they\u00a0must be adapted\u00a0to\u00a0local context\u00a0and monitored\u00a0in<br \/>\na consistent way.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That is why WHO\u00a0has now released\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/health-policy-systems.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12961-020-00554-4\">Antenatal\u00a0care\u00a0recommendations\u00a0adaptation\u00a0toolkit<\/a>,\u00a0in collaboration with\u00a0Ministries of Health,\u00a0WHO Regional and Country offices,<br \/>\nimplementation experts and country stakeholders.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0toolkit\u00a0sets out practical steps for governments\u00a0wishing to\u00a0introduce\u00a0WHO\u00a0recommendations\u00a0at national and subnational level.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/gh.bmj.com\/content\/5\/6\/e002605\">an\u00a0antenatal care\u00a0monitoring framework<\/a>, has been developed to\u00a0help\u00a0countries and health facilities\u00a0track\u00a0their\u00a0progress and impact.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>A standard\u00a0process\u00a0for\u00a0adapting WHO guidance\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/9789241549912\">WHO\u00a0antenatal care guidelines for a positive pregnancy experience<\/a>\u00a0include 23 recommendations which are context-specific: they need tailoring to local situations, for example,\u00a0populations\u00a0with different nutritional needs or rates<br \/>\nof infections.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Currently there is no standardized method for implementing global recommendations at the national level.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The new antenatal care toolkit guides policy makers\u00a0in\u00a0how to interpret and apply context-specific recommendations; steps which can be\u00a0time-consuming\u00a0but\u00a0which\u00a0are essential for providing care\u00a0to\u00a0meet each person\u2019s<br \/>\nneeds and preferences.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Countries were not only asking for technical guidance on antenatal care, they also wanted an evidence-based approach on how to adapt that guidance for their own contexts,\u201d explained\u00a0Dr\u00a0Nancy\u00a0Kidula,\u00a0a\u00a0Medical<br \/>\nOfficer in\u00a0the\u00a0WHO Regional\u00a0Office for Africa.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Understanding local context to improve maternal health\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The Ugandan\u00a0Ministry of Health\u00a0has\u00a0successfully used the\u00a0new\u00a0toolkit\u00a0as part of efforts to improve\u00a0women\u2019s\u00a0experience of\u00a0care during\u00a0pregnancy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Policy makers were able to take up\u00a0the\u00a0new recommendations\u00a0while also\u00a0addressing\u00a0local practices which are not recommended, by following practical steps for community engagement, planning and analysis.\u00a0They were also<br \/>\nable to integrate\u00a0antenatal care\u00a0into the country\u2019s wider maternal health framework, including TB screening and birth and emergency preparedness plans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This\u00a0new toolkit\u00a0has\u00a0galvanized country teams, changing the way that they look at\u00a0antenatal care\u00a0coverage, quality and availability, continued\u00a0Dr\u00a0Kidula, who\u00a0supported the toolkit development\u00a0and<br \/>\nits implementation\u00a0in Uganda, as well as\u00a0eSwatini, Namibia, Rwanda and Zambia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the tools to\u00a0analyse\u00a0different levels of the health system,\u00a0they have been able to see where\u00a0there are not enough trained\u00a0staff and essential supplies\u00a0for the\u00a0women seeking care. We are seeing a major<br \/>\ndifference in the\u00a0antenatal care\u00a0guideline of countries that have used the toolkit, and those that have not.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Monitoring delivery and impact of antenatal care\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Monitoring\u00a0is an important part of the improvement process for routine\u00a0antenatal care,\u00a0at both country and health facility level.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0new\u00a0monitoring framework\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0WHO\u00a0antenatal care\u00a0recommendations\u00a0includes\u00a0indicators on clinical care and strategies for improvement.
