{"id":18870,"date":"2020-09-01T06:31:34","date_gmt":"2020-09-01T06:31:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=18870"},"modified":"2020-09-01T06:31:34","modified_gmt":"2020-09-01T06:31:34","slug":"are-opioids-prescribed-too-freely-as-patients-are-moved-to-nursing-homes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=18870","title":{"rendered":"Are Opioids Prescribed Too Freely as Patients Are Moved to Nursing Homes?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"News_list_rdr art\">\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h3>Latest Senior Health News<\/h3>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: Are Opioids Prescribed Too Freely as Patients Are Moved to Nursing Homes?\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/media.healthday.com\/Images\/icimages\/nursing_home193.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>FRIDAY, Aug. 28, 2020 (HealthDay News)<\/p>\n<p>When hospital patients are moved to a skilled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/breastfeeding\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"proc\">nursing<\/a> facility, they are too often given a prescription for a high-dose opioid painkiller, new research suggests.<\/p>\n<p>For the study, researchers at the Oregon State University College of Pharmacy looked at nearly 4,400 hospital patients in Portland sent to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/breastfeeding\/article.htm\" rel=\"proc\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">nursing<\/a> facilities to receive either short-term rehabilitative care or long-term care in a residential setting.<\/p>\n<p>The investigators found that seven out of 10 of these patients received an opioid prescription when they left the hospital, and most were for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/oxycodone\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"pharm\">oxycodone<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/oxycodone\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"pharm\">OxyContin<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Over half of the prescriptions dispensed were high-dose &#8212; equivalent to 90 milligrams of morphine or higher &#8212; a threshold that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/prevention\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">Prevention<\/a> advises doctors to &#8220;avoid&#8221; prescribing, according to a university news release.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the patients who received an opioid prescription were over 65 years of age, an age group that is highly vulnerable to opioid-associated harm, the study authors noted.<\/p>\n<p>The findings were published online recently in the journal <i>Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The results emphasize the need for more attention to be paid to safely managing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/pain_management\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">pain<\/a> of this patient group, the researchers concluded.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Increased efforts are likely needed to optimize opioid prescribing among patients transitioning from hospitals to skilled nursing facilities,&#8221; said study author Jon Furuno, an associate professor at the university and the interim chair of the department of pharmacy practice.<\/p>\n<p>Furuno pointed out that patients in nursing facilities may also be undertreated for their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/pain_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">pain<\/a>, showing the complexity of this issue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Prescribers and pharmacists need to work together to ensure patients&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/pain_management\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">pain<\/a> is managed safely, and knowing which patients are most at risk can inform the best use of resources like medication counseling and other interventions,&#8221; Furuno said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Serena McNiff<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2020 HealthDay.
