but they&#8217;re more likely to require critical care, according to the study.<\/p>\n<p>Having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">COVID-19<\/a> also increases a mother-to-be&#8217;s risk of having a preterm baby and of her baby being admitted to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/stages_of_pregnancy_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">neonatal<\/a> unit, researchers found.<\/p>\n<p>The risk of severe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">COVID-19<\/a> among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/pregnancy\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">pregnant<\/a> women is higher among those who are older, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/obesity_weight_loss\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">overweight<\/a> and have preexisting health conditions such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/high_blood_pressure_hypertension\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">high blood pressure<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/diabetes_mellitus\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">diabetes<\/a>, the researchers also concluded.<\/p>\n<p>The international team of researchers, led by Shakila Thangaratinam, with the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/womens_health\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">Women&#8217;s Health<\/a> at the University of Birmingham in England, looked at 77 studies that included more than 11,400 pregnant and recently pregnant women hospitalized with suspected or confirmed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_outbreak_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" rel=\"slide\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">COVID-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Compared with non-pregnant women, the researchers found that pregnant and recently pregnant women with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" rel=\"sym\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">COVID-19<\/a> were less likely to have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/aches_pain_fever\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">fever<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/muscle_pain_myalgia\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">muscle pain<\/a>, but were more likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit and to require ventilation.<\/p>\n<p>One-quarter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/babies_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">babies<\/a> born to mothers with COVID-19 were admitted to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/stages_of_pregnancy_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" rel=\"slide\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">neonatal<\/a> unit, which is higher than the rate among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/babies_quiz\/quiz.htm\" rel=\"quiz\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">babies<\/a> born to mothers without the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/stillbirth\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">stillbirth<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/babies_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">newborn<\/a> death rates were low among mothers with COVID-19, according to the study. The results were published Sept. 1 in the <i>BMJ<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The findings show that health care providers need to be aware that pregnant women with the virus might require intensive care and specialized baby care, Thangaratinam and her colleagues said in a journal news release.<\/p>\n<p>Also, pregnant women with preexisting health conditions as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/obesity_weight_loss\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">obese<\/a> and older women need to be considered at high risk for COVID-19, the researchers added.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s believed that pregnant women are at higher risk for COVID-19 infection, and there are concerns about potential harm to mothers and babies.
