{"id":19799,"date":"2020-09-05T07:13:34","date_gmt":"2020-09-05T07:13:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=19799"},"modified":"2020-09-05T07:13:34","modified_gmt":"2020-09-05T07:13:34","slug":"science-not-yet-advanced-enough-for-genetic-editing-of-embryos-expert-panel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=19799","title":{"rendered":"Science Not Yet Advanced Enough for Genetic Editing of Embryos: Expert Panel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>FRIDAY, Sept. 4, 2020 (Healthday News) &#8212; Genetic editing of embryos should not be attempted yet because the science isn&#8217;t advanced enough to ensure safety, an international panel of experts says.<\/p>\n<p>Their paper was released nearly two years after a Chinese scientist claimed he&#8217;d helped create the world&#8217;s first gene-edited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/babies_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">babies<\/a>, which was widely condemned as unethical, the <i>Associated Press<\/i> reported.<\/p>\n<p>If a country permits genetic editing of embryos, it should restrict it to cases where people have no or very poor options for having a child without a serious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/genetic_disease\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">genetic disease<\/a>, said the panel that was formed by the U.S. National Academy of Medicine, U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the United Kingdom&#8217;s Royal Society.<\/p>\n<p>The panel didn&#8217;t take a position on whether genetic editing of embryos is ethical.
