{"id":19817,"date":"2020-09-05T09:36:22","date_gmt":"2020-09-05T09:36:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=19817"},"modified":"2020-09-05T09:36:22","modified_gmt":"2020-09-05T09:36:22","slug":"common-meds-tied-to-faster-mental-decline-in-seniors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=19817","title":{"rendered":"Common Meds Tied to Faster Mental Decline in Seniors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: Common Meds Tied to Faster Mental Decline in Seniors\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/media.healthday.com\/Images\/icimages\/40115.jpg\"\/><b>By Amy Norton<\/b><br \/><i>HealthDay Reporter<\/i><\/p>\n<p>THURSDAY, Sept. 3, 2020 (HealthDay News)<\/p>\n<p>A group of widely used medications might speed up older adults&#8217; mental decline &#8212; especially if they are at increased risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/dementia\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">dementia<\/a>, a new study hints.<\/p>\n<p>The medications in question are called anticholinergics, and they are used to treat a diverse range of conditions &#8212; from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/allergy\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">allergies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/motion_sickness_sea_sickness_car_sickness\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">motion sickness<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/overactive_bladder\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">overactive bladder<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/high_blood_pressure_hypertension\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">high blood pressure<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/depression\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">depression<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/parkinsons_disease_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">Parkinson&#8217;s<\/a> disease.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/drugs_what_you_should_know_about_your_drugs\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"pharm\">drugs<\/a> are known to have short-term side effects such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/confusion\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">confusion<\/a> and fuzzy memory.<\/p>\n<p>But studies in recent years have turned up a more troubling connection: a heightened risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/dementia_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">dementia<\/a> among long-term users.<\/p>\n<p>The new findings, published Sept. 2 in <i>Neurology<\/i>, add another layer: Healthy older adults on these medications had an increased risk of developing mild cognitive impairment. That refers to subtler problems with memory and thinking that may progress to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/dementia_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">dementia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And the link, researchers found, was strongest among two groups of people already at heightened risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/alzheimers_disease_causes_stages_and_symptoms\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> disease: those who carry a gene variant that raises the odds of the disease, and people with certain biological &#8220;markers&#8221; of the disease in their spinal fluid.<\/p>\n<p>The results do not prove anticholinergic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/drugs_what_you_should_know_about_your_drugs\/article.htm\" rel=\"pharm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">drugs<\/a> are to blame, cautioned Heather Snyder, vice president of medical and scientific relations at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/alzheimers_disease_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> Association.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This study shows an association in a very specific population, but it does not prove causation,&#8221; said Snyder, who was not involved in the research.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is biologically plausible that the drugs could increase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/dementia\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">dementia<\/a> risk, said Dr. Allison Reiss, an associate professor at NYU Long Island School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>The medications, she said, block a chemical called acetylcholine, which transmits messages among nerve cells. Acetylcholine is involved in memory and learning, and is typically low in people with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/alzheimers_disease_causes_stages_and_symptoms\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The preponderance of evidence suggests it&#8217;s better to avoid these medications in older adults,&#8221; said Reiss, who is also an advisory board member at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/alzheimers_disease_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" rel=\"slide\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> Foundation of America.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s especially true, she added, when alternatives exist.<\/p>\n<p>Many medications sold for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/10_common_allergy_triggers_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">allergies<\/a>, colds and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/chronic_cough\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">coughs<\/a> have anticholinergic properties &#8212; and are available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/over-the-counter_products\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"pharm\">over-the-counter<\/a>. So it&#8217;s important, Reiss said, that older adults be aware that non-prescription drugs are not automatically &#8220;safe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You don&#8217;t want to add any medications that aren&#8217;t necessary,&#8221; said Reiss, who had no role in the study.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, certain prescription <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/antidepressants\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"pharm\">drugs for depression<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/high_blood_pressure_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">high blood pressure<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/parkinsons_disease_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" rel=\"sym\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">Parkinson&#8217;s<\/a> disease and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/schizophrenia\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">schizophrenia<\/a> have anticholinergic properties, as do medications for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/overactive_bladder\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">overactive bladder<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/urinary_incontinence\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">urinary incontinence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Reiss said that people with questions about their prescriptions should talk to their doctor.<\/p>\n<p>For the new study, researchers led by Lisa Delano-Wood, from the University of California, San Diego, followed 688 older adults who initially had no problems with memory or thinking skills. One-third said they&#8217;d been regularly taking anticholinergic drugs for more than six months &#8212; usually far more than one.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, they were taking an average of almost five medications per person.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next 10 years, people on anticholinergics were more likely to develop mild cognitive impairment, which was gauged through yearly tests. Over half &#8212; 51% &#8212; developed the condition, versus 42% of older adults not taking anticholinergics.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers did consider other factors that affect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/dementia_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" rel=\"sym\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">dementia<\/a> risk &#8212; such as people&#8217;s education levels and history of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_disease_coronary_artery_disease\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">heart disease<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/stroke_symptoms_and_treatment\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">stroke<\/a>. A similar pattern was seen among study participants with Alzheimer&#8217;s-linked proteins in their spinal fluid.<\/p>\n<p>That, Reiss said, suggests the medications might have &#8220;accelerated a process that was already in place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Snyder said the results &#8220;illustrate that we need better treatments &#8212; not only for Alzheimer&#8217;s and other dementias, but for other common conditions associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/senior_health\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">aging<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2020 HealthDay.
