Not much is\u00a0known about music composer S.\u00a0Mohinder\u00a0who\u00a0passed away\u00a0on\u00a06 September.\u00a0 He\u00a0composed music for a tiny\u00a0huddle\u00a0of Hindi and\u00a0Punjabi movies in\u00a0the\u00a01950s and\u00a060s, the most popular being the \u2018Punjabi\u00a0Naanak\u00a0Naam\u00a0Jahaaz\u00a0Hai\u2019, and then migrated\u00a0to the\u00a0USA. Lata Mangeshkar, who recorded a handful of\u00a0melodies with S.\u00a0Mohinder,\u00a0recallshim as a\u00a0kind gentle soul with a keen eye\u00a0for rhythm.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u00a0don\u2019t know why he\u00a0left his career in\u00a0Hindi cinema for the\u00a0US.\u00a0I wasn\u2019t close enough\u00a0to him\u00a0to\u00a0probe\u00a0into his\u00a0family matters. I\u00a0do remember that among the\u00a0handful of songs I\u00a0recorded\u00a0for\u00a0Mohinderji\u00a0the\u00a0most famous, and the one that\u00a0is\u00a0remembered\u00a0to this\u00a0day, was\u00a0\u2018Guzra hua zamaana nahi aata dobara\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0Bahut\u00a0khoobsurat\u00a0gaana\u00a0hai,\u201d\u00a0she\u00a0recalls\u00a0that she\u00a0may have recorded it on the set.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis used to happen once in a while. There were occasions when there was no time to record in a studio. I used to go straight on the set and record the song during the shooting. Perhaps, \u2018Guzra hua zamaana nahi aata dobara\u2019<\/em> was recorded in this way.\u201d<\/p>\n

I remind Lataji that she had also sung a lovely duet \u2018Aaja O Jaan-e-Wafa\u2019<\/em> with Hemant Kumar in Shirin Farhad and also some other gems in the films Naata and Picnic<\/em> for S. Mohinder.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese, I don\u2019t recall. I remember doing very less work with Mohinderji. But, whatever I did was satisfactory. He did return from the US, and we had met. He was a polite soft-spoken man,\u201d remembers Lataji.<\/p>\n
