He was hospitalized and put on a ventilator, but taken off life support on Aug. 2 after he showed no brain activity, <i>CBS News<\/i> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The teen&#8217;s parents hope their tragedy alerts other families to the dangers of this amoeba, called <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/naegleria_infection\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">Naegleria fowleri<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So parents are aware, maybe they weren&#8217;t thinking about it because I can sure tell you we weren&#8217;t,&#8221; the teen&#8217;s father, Travis Wall said, <i>CBS News<\/i> reported. &#8220;We grew up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/swimming\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">swimming<\/a> in ponds and creeks and stuff like that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Typically found in warm fresh water, such as lakes, rivers and springs, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/naegleria_infection\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">Naegleria fowleri<\/a><\/i> can get into the brain when contaminated water enters the nose, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/prevention\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">Prevention<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2019 HealthDay.
