{"id":22064,"date":"2020-09-15T08:09:01","date_gmt":"2020-09-15T08:09:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=22064"},"modified":"2020-09-15T08:09:01","modified_gmt":"2020-09-15T08:09:01","slug":"with-hurricane-season-here-watch-out-for-one-carbon-monoxide-danger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=22064","title":{"rendered":"With Hurricane Season Here, Watch Out for One Carbon Monoxide Danger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: With Hurricane Season Here, Watch Out for One Carbon Monoxide Danger\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/media.healthday.com\/Images\/icimages\/generator928.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>SATURDAY, Sept. 12, 2020 (HealthDay News)<\/p>\n<p>A portable generator may power up your home after a hurricane or storm knocks out your electricity, but it also poses the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, one expert says.<\/p>\n<p>Carbon monoxide is often called the silent killer because it&#8217;s colorless, odorless and tasteless.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Never use a generator in your home or garage, even if the doors and windows are open,&#8221; said Dr. Lindell Weaver, medical director of hyperbaric medicine at Intermountain Medical Center and LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Only use generators outside, more than 20 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/feet_facts_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">feet<\/a> away from your home, doors and windows,&#8221; Weaver added in an Intermountain news release.<\/p>\n<p>All homes and businesses should have a carbon monoxide alarm. Carbon monoxide poisoning should be suspected if multiple people have &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/flu\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">flu-like<\/a>&#8221; symptoms all at once, especially if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/aches_pain_fever\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">fever<\/a> is absent, Weaver said.<\/p>\n<p>Another sign is if a person improves when out of the area where suspected carbon monoxide exposure is occurring.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/carbon_monoxide_poisoning_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">Carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms<\/a> include: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/headache\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">headache<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/dizziness_dizzy\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">dizziness<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/weakness\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">weakness<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/nausea_and_vomiting\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">vomiting<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/chest_pain\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">chest pain<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/confusion\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">confusion<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/seizure\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">seizure<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/fainting\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">loss of consciousness<\/a> and death.<\/p>\n<p>If a person develops symptoms consistent with carbon monoxide poisoning, evacuate the area immediately and call 911, Weaver said.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment for carbon monoxide poisoning reduces the risk of permanent brain or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_how_the_heart_works\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">heart<\/a> injury, but patients may still suffer disability.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s crucial to take precautions to prevent and avoid carbon monoxide exposure, Weaver emphasized.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Robert Preidt<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2020 HealthDay.
