{"id":22298,"date":"2020-09-16T06:21:32","date_gmt":"2020-09-16T06:21:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=22298"},"modified":"2020-09-16T06:21:32","modified_gmt":"2020-09-16T06:21:32","slug":"are-school-lunches-a-ticket-to-healthy-eating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=22298","title":{"rendered":"Are School Lunches a Ticket to Healthy Eating?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: Are School Lunches a Ticket to Healthy Eating?\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/media.healthday.com\/Images\/icimages\/school_lunch1105.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>MONDAY, Sept. 14, 2020 (HealthDay News)<\/p>\n<p>Healthier school meals improve the diets of American children, a new study finds.<\/p>\n<p>The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act took effect in 2012 and required school meals to include more whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and less sodium.<\/p>\n<p>To assess how the act affected students&#8217; diets, researchers analyzed data from the National Health and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/nutrition\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">Nutrition<\/a> Examination Survey 2007-2016, which gathered information on everything children ate over two separate 24-hour periods and the sources of their foods.<\/p>\n<p>After the act was implemented, eating school meals improved how students&#8217; diets met key recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, according to the study published recently in the journal <i>Annals of Epidemiology<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>School meals provide a substantial proportion of the food (10%) eaten by U.S. children and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/teenagers\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">teens<\/a> throughout the year, according to the researchers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Findings from our study suggest that the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act improved the quality of U.S. kids&#8217; diets, which sets them up for healthier lives,&#8221; said study leader Aaron Berger, who conducted the study while a doctoral student at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are pleased to see that school meals continue to be provided during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">COVID-19<\/a> school closures, given that otherwise many households would not have this food security during the challenging economic circumstances that have come with the pandemic,&#8221; he said in a university news release.<\/p>\n<p>When schools return to normal routines, communities and families should encourage students to eat school meals because they benefit from the dietary requirements of the act, according to Berger.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Agriculture has recently released draft rules to weaken school meal standards, Berger noted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Robert Preidt<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2020 HealthDay.
