{"id":24269,"date":"2020-09-25T04:52:38","date_gmt":"2020-09-25T04:52:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=24269"},"modified":"2020-09-25T04:52:38","modified_gmt":"2020-09-25T04:52:38","slug":"man-dies-from-eating-too-much-black-licorice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=24269","title":{"rendered":"Man Dies From Eating Too Much Black Licorice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>THURSDAY, Sept. 24, 2020 (HealthDay News) &#8212; A Massachusetts man died from eating too much black <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/licorice_glycyrrhiza_glabra-oral\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"pharm\">licorice<\/a>, doctors say.<\/p>\n<p>The 54-year-old construction worker ate a bag and half every day for a few weeks, which led to an imbalance in his body&#8217;s nutrients that caused his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_how_the_heart_works\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">heart<\/a> to stop, according to the case study in the <i>New England Journal of Medicine<\/i>, the <i>Associated Press<\/i> reported.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even a small amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/licorice_glycyrrhiza_glabra-oral\/article.htm\" rel=\"pharm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">licorice<\/a> you eat can increase your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/image-collection\/blood_pressure_picture\/picture.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"img\">blood pressure<\/a> a little bit,&#8221; said Dr. Neel Butala, a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital who was involved in the case.<\/p>\n<p>Black licorice contains glycyrrhizic acid, which can cause dangerously low levels of potassium and imbalances in other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/vitamins_minerals_and_nutritional_supplements\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">minerals<\/a> called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/electrolytes\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"proc\">electrolytes<\/a>, the <i>AP<\/i> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Consuming just 2 ounces of black licorice a day for two weeks could cause a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_how_the_heart_works\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">heart<\/a> rhythm problem, especially for people older than 40, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2019 HealthDay.
