{"id":24283,"date":"2020-09-25T06:56:26","date_gmt":"2020-09-25T06:56:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=24283"},"modified":"2020-09-25T06:56:26","modified_gmt":"2020-09-25T06:56:26","slug":"common-heart-defect-limits-exercise-ability-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=24283","title":{"rendered":"Common Heart Defect Limits Exercise Ability: Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: Common Heart Defect Limits Exercise Ability: Study\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/media.healthday.com\/Images\/icimages\/46231.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>WEDNESDAY, Sept. 23, 2020 (HealthDay News)<\/p>\n<p>People born with a hole in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_how_the_heart_works\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">heart<\/a> may lose 20% or more of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/exercise\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">exercise<\/a> capacity as they age, even if the defect is repaired.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/ventricular_septal_defect\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">ventricular septal defect<\/a> is a hole in the wall separating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_how_the_heart_works\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">heart<\/a>&#8216;s pumping chambers. It can be surgically closed or left alone. People born with this defect have poorer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/exercise_and_fitness_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">exercise<\/a> ability than healthy people.<\/p>\n<p>A new study suggests that by age 40, people with ventricular septal defects, whether repaired or not, have worse <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/exercise\/article.htm\" rel=\"sub\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">exercise<\/a> capacity than others, and the difference increases with age.<\/p>\n<p>The findings were published online Sept. 23 in the <i>Journal of the American Heart Association<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/congenital_heart_disease\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">congenital heart defect<\/a> patients are discharged from follow-up care as they reach adulthood, yet many experienced limitations during physical activity,&#8221; said lead author Dr. Marie Maagaard, of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These results underline the importance of keeping adults with ventricular septal defects in follow-up programs and including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/exercise_and_fitness_quiz\/quiz.htm\" rel=\"quiz\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">exercise<\/a> tests in the assessment of their potential deteriorating functional capacity,&#8221; she added in a journal news release.<\/p>\n<p>Functional exercise capacity is what a person&#8217;s heart will let them do, based upon its ability to deliver sufficient amounts of blood and oxygen.<\/p>\n<p>For the study, the researchers measured exercise capacity among 30 patients with repaired ventricular septal defects and 30 who had small but unrepaired defects. They were compared to a control group of 60 healthy adults.<\/p>\n<p>Compared with healthy adults, exercise capacity was 29% lower for older patients with repaired ventricular septal defects after age 40.<\/p>\n<p>Patients in their mid-20s with repaired ventricular septal defects had 18% less capacity, compared with their healthy counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>Older patients with unrepaired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/ventricular_septal_defect_vsd_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">ventricular septal defect<\/a> had 21% lower capacity; while younger patients with an unrepaired defect had 17% lower capacity than healthy people, the researchers found.<\/p>\n<p>Those with repaired and unrepaired defects had lower exercise capacity at low-intensity exercise levels, detectable at about at 20% of maximal effort, the study found.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Steven Reinberg<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2020 HealthDay.
