{"id":24379,"date":"2020-09-26T05:45:01","date_gmt":"2020-09-26T05:45:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=24379"},"modified":"2020-09-26T05:45:01","modified_gmt":"2020-09-26T05:45:01","slug":"scientists-sequence-genome-of-mold-that-produced-first-penicillin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=24379","title":{"rendered":"Scientists Sequence Genome of Mold That Produced First Penicillin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>FRIDAY, Sept. 25, 2020 (HealthDay News) &#8212; The genome of the original <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/mold_exposure\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">mold<\/a> that produced the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/penicillins-injection\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"pharm\">penicillin<\/a> has been sequenced by scientists.<\/p>\n<p>The world&#8217;s first antibiotic was accidentally discovered in 1928 by Alexander Fleming when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/mold_exposure\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">mold<\/a> contaminated one of his petri dishes, <i>CNN<\/i> reported.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Remarkably, after all this time spent in the freezer, (the mold) grows back fairly readily. It is fairly easy, you just break it out of that tube and put it on a petri dish plate and away it goes,&#8221; said Tim Barraclough, a professor at the Department of Life Sciences at Imperial College London and the Department of Zoology at Oxford University.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first time the genome of the mold has been sequenced, and the researchers said what they&#8217;ve learned could help efforts to combat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/antibiotic_resistance\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">antibiotic resistance<\/a>, <i>CNN<\/i> reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2019 HealthDay.
