{"id":26134,"date":"2020-10-17T08:21:26","date_gmt":"2020-10-17T08:21:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=26134"},"modified":"2020-10-17T08:21:26","modified_gmt":"2020-10-17T08:21:26","slug":"heart-defects-dont-increase-risk-of-severe-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=26134","title":{"rendered":"Heart Defects Don&#8217;t Increase Risk of Severe COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: Heart Defects Don't Increase Risk of Severe COVID-19\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/media.healthday.com\/Images\/icimages\/girl_hospital_bed64.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>FRIDAY, Oct. 16, 2020<\/p>\n<p>In what will come as reassuring news to those who were born with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_how_the_heart_works\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">heart<\/a> defect, new research finds these people aren&#8217;t at increased risk for moderate or severe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">COVID-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The study included more than 7,000 adults and children who were born with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_how_the_heart_works\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">heart<\/a> defect (congenital <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_disease_coronary_artery_disease\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">heart disease<\/a>) and followed by researchers at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Between March and July 2020, the center reported 53 congenital <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_disease_pictures_slideshow_visual_guide\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">heart disease<\/a> patients (median age 34) with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_outbreak_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">COVID-19<\/a> infection.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the beginning of the pandemic, many feared that congenital <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_disease_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">heart disease<\/a> would be as big a risk factor for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">COVID-19<\/a> as adult-onset <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_disease_pictures_slideshow_visual_guide\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">cardiovascular disease<\/a>,&#8221; the study authors wrote in the report published online Oct. 14 in the <i>Journal of the American Heart Association<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>However, the researchers were &#8220;reassured by the low number of patients treated at their center and the patients&#8217; outcomes,&#8221; they said in a journal news release.<\/p>\n<p>Among the 43 adults and 10 children with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/congenital_heart_disease\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">congenital heart defect<\/a> who were infected with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">COVID-19<\/a>, 58% had complex congenital anatomy, 15% had a genetic syndrome, 11% had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/pulmonary_hypertension\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">pulmonary hypertension<\/a> and 17% were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/obesity_weight_loss\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">obese<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nine patients (17%) had a moderate\/severe infection, and three patients (6%) died, according to the study.<\/p>\n<p>A concurrent genetic syndrome in patients of all ages and advanced physiologic stage in adult patients were each associated with an increased risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_outbreak_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" rel=\"slide\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">COVID-19<\/a> symptom severity, the findings showed.<\/p>\n<p>Five patients had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/down_syndrome_overview\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">trisomy 21<\/a> (an extra chromosome at position 21), four patients had Eisenmenger&#8217;s syndrome (abnormal blood circulation caused by structural defects in the heart) and two patients had DiGeorge syndrome (a condition caused by the deletion of a segment of chromosome 22). Nearly all patients with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/down_syndrome_overview\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">trisomy 21<\/a> and DiGeorge syndrome had moderate\/severe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" rel=\"sym\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">COVID-19<\/a> symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While our sample size is small, these results imply that specific congenital heart lesions may not be sufficient cause alone for severe COVID-19 infection,&#8221; according to Dr. Matthew Lewis, of Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and his colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Despite evidence that adult-onset <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_disease_pictures_slideshow_visual_guide\/article.htm\" rel=\"slide\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">cardiovascular disease<\/a> is a risk factor for worse outcomes among patients with COVID-19, patients with [congenital <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_disease_coronary_artery_disease\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">heart disease<\/a>] without concomitant genetic syndrome, and adults who are not at advanced physiological stage, do not appear to be disproportionately impacted,&#8221; the study authors concluded.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Robert Preidt<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2020 HealthDay.
