He&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/whats_gastroenterologist\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"webmdlt\">gastroenterologist<\/a> with Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Group in Verona, N.J.<\/p>\n<p>The risk is the same for men and women. For most people, routine screening should begin at age 50, but those with a personal or family history of colon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/cancer_101_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">cancer<\/a> should be screened earlier.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The most critical risk factor for colon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/cancer_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">cancer<\/a> for those under the age of 50 is family history and history of certain genetic mutations that may predispose one to get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/colon_cancer\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">colon cancer<\/a> at a younger age,&#8221; Shah said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Young people with first-degree relatives with colon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/cancer\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">cancer<\/a> are at the highest risk and should be aware of any possible signs or symptoms,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>The most important signs are sudden major changes in bowel habits, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/blood_in_the_stool_rectal_bleeding\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">blood in the stool<\/a>, unintentional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/weight_loss\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">weight loss<\/a>, narrower than usual stools, and new onset <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/anemia\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">anemia<\/a> detected in blood work.<\/p>\n<p>Other non-cancerous conditions may cause these signs, so it&#8217;s important to see a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/whats_gastroenterologist\/article.htm\" rel=\"webmdlt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">gastroenterologist<\/a> and undergo routine colon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/cancer_101_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" rel=\"slide\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">cancer<\/a> screenings, Shah said in a medical center news release.<\/p>\n<p>There are a number of screening options that you can discuss with your doctor.<\/p>\n<p>Colon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/cancer_quiz\/quiz.htm\" rel=\"quiz\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">cancer<\/a> develops from polyps, which are abnormal growths on the inside lining of the colon. Polyps can be benign (not harmful); pre-cancerous; or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/cancer_101_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">malignant<\/a> (cancerous).<\/p>\n<p>Most polyps are not harmful, but certain types are at high risk of developing into cancer.
