{"id":26338,"date":"2020-10-21T07:27:29","date_gmt":"2020-10-21T07:27:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=26338"},"modified":"2020-10-21T07:27:29","modified_gmt":"2020-10-21T07:27:29","slug":"curbing-covid-brought-unexpected-benefit-for-asthma-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=26338","title":{"rendered":"Curbing COVID Brought Unexpected Benefit for Asthma Patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: Curbing COVID Brought Unexpected Benefit for Asthma Patients\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/media.healthday.com\/Images\/icimages\/corona311.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>TUESDAY, Oct. 20, 2020 (HealthDay News)<\/p>\n<p>Measures enacted to slow the spread of the new coronavirus also appeared to reduce hospitalizations for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/asthma_overview\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">asthma<\/a>, a new study finds.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers compared weekly data on hospitalizations at 272 hospitals in Japan in the first five months of 2020 to the same period in 2017, 2018 and 2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/asthma_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">Asthma<\/a> hospitalizations in 2017-19 and 2020 showed similar trends until week eight, but in 2020 hospitalizations began to decline in week nine, the study found.<\/p>\n<p>Hospitalizations for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">COVID-19<\/a> were first recorded during week seven of 2020. Further analysis found a significant decrease in the average number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/asthma_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">asthma<\/a> hospitalizations during weeks nine to 22 of this year compared to 2017-19.<\/p>\n<p>The findings were published Oct. 13 in <i>The Journal of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/allergy\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">Allergy<\/a> and Clinical Immunology: In Practice<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/asthma_overview\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">Asthma<\/a> hospitalizations usually indicate that an individual&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/asthma_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" rel=\"slide\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">asthma<\/a> is not currently under control,&#8221; corresponding author Dr. Atsushi Miyawaki, of the University of Tokyo, said in a journal news release. &#8220;This would suggest that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/asthma_quiz\/quiz.htm\" rel=\"quiz\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">asthma<\/a> control improved during the pandemic. It illustrates the importance of environmental factors when it comes to treating and managing patients with asthma.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One possible explanation is that increased hygiene to prevent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_outbreak_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">COVID-19<\/a> would also reduce exposure to asthma triggers, according to the researchers. Enhanced precautions &#8212; such as frequent cleaning and reduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/smoking_and_quitting_smoking\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">smoking<\/a> &#8212; by people concerned that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">COVID-19<\/a> may trigger asthma may also have helped reduce triggers.<\/p>\n<p>Other possible explanations include people being more likely to use preventative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/asthma_medications\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">asthma medications<\/a>, and community <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/covid-19_prevention_tips\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">COVID-19 prevention<\/a> measures helping reduce other respiratory infections, which can cause worsen asthma.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Robert Preidt<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2020 HealthDay.
