Having enough hospital nurses to ensure that new moms get top-notch care.<\/p>\n<p>Hospitals with higher rates of exclusive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/breastfeeding\/article.htm\" rel=\"proc\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">breastfeeding<\/a> had nurses who provided more consistent care, according to a new report.<\/p>\n<p>That care included helping moms have skin-to-skin contact with their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/babies_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">babies<\/a> and breastfeed within an hour of giving birth. Nurses also provided education and encouragement, made referrals to lactation consultants, and kept healthy birth parents and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/babies_quiz\/quiz.htm\" rel=\"quiz\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">babies<\/a> together.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nurses make substantial, often unrecognized, contributions to public health during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/pregnancy_planning_preparing_for_pregnancy\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">pregnancy<\/a>, and during and following birth,&#8221; said study author Audrey Lyndon, assistant dean for clinical research at NYU Rory Meyers College of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/breastfeeding\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"proc\">Nursing<\/a> in New York City. &#8220;Our research provides a great example of how supportive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/breastfeeding\/article.htm\" rel=\"proc\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">nursing<\/a> care can have longer term effects on maternal and infant health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For the study, Lyndon&#8217;s team surveyed 512 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/early_signs_and_symptoms_of_labor\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">labor<\/a> nurses from 36 hospitals in three U.S. states. The researchers found that hospitals with higher rates of exclusive breastfeeding had fewer incidents of missed nursing care.<\/p>\n<p>Lead author Kathleen Rice Simpson said, &#8220;We suspect that multiple structural factors affect nurses&#8217; capacity to provide sufficient and appropriate support for successful exclusive breastfeeding.&#8221; She&#8217;s a perinatal clinical nurse specialist in St. Louis, Mo.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hospital and maternity unit culture, policies, communication, availability of resources, including adequate nurse staffing, and promotion of effective practices for initiation and sustainment of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/breastfeeding\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"proc\">human milk<\/a> feeding are all important,&#8221; she explained in an NYU news release.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/breastfeeding\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"proc\">Breast milk<\/a> provides complete <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/nutrition\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">nutrition<\/a> for infants, helping strengthen their immune systems.
