{"id":26614,"date":"2020-10-27T09:42:22","date_gmt":"2020-10-27T09:42:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=26614"},"modified":"2020-10-27T09:42:22","modified_gmt":"2020-10-27T09:42:22","slug":"an-unexpected-finding-on-what-might-drive-joint-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=26614","title":{"rendered":"An Unexpected Finding on What Might Drive Joint Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: An Unexpected Finding on What Might Drive Joint Disease\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/media.healthday.com\/Images\/icimages\/59071.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>FRIDAY, Oct. 23, 2020 (HealthDay News)<\/p>\n<p>High levels of a protein that lubricates the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/image-collection\/knee_joint_picture\/picture.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"img\">knee joint<\/a> may actually be a harbinger of impending joint disease, a surprising animal study suggests.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers looked at the role of the protein, known as lubricin, in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/puppies_and_dogs_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">dogs<\/a> because it may also be involved in similar injuries in humans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lubricin is crucial for normal joint function and the lubrication of cartilage,&#8221; said researcher Heidi Reesink, an assistant professor in equine health at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University. &#8220;We know that if a person or animal doesn&#8217;t make that protein, they will develop devastating joint disease affecting all the major weight-bearing joints.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But Reesink found that in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/puppies_and_dogs_quiz\/quiz.htm\" rel=\"quiz\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">dogs<\/a> that suffered a ligament tear in the knee, lubricin levels increased within the joint, which is the opposite of the conventional assumptions. &#8220;The dogma in this field has been that lubricin decreases in joint disease,&#8221; Reesink said in a university news release.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that in three dogs, lubricin increased in the time between the initial injury but before any signs of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/arthritis\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">arthritis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This indicates that the presence of increased lubricin might actually be a biomarker for predicting future <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/osteoarthritis\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">osteoarthritis<\/a>,&#8221; Reesink said. &#8220;We also saw increased lubricin in dogs months to years after they injured their ACLs, suggesting that lubricin might be an indicator of ongoing joint instability.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In looking at horses and dogs, we&#8217;re seeing the same pattern,&#8221; Reesink said. &#8220;The strongest piece of data would be to show it in humans as well.&#8221; However, findings in animal studies don&#8217;t always translate to humans.<\/p>\n<p>Increased lubricin could become a signal for doctors to intervene or try a different treatment, she added.<\/p>\n<p>The study was published recently in the journal <i>Scientific Reports<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Steven Reinberg<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2020 HealthDay.
