{"id":26724,"date":"2020-10-29T07:11:52","date_gmt":"2020-10-29T07:11:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=26724"},"modified":"2020-10-29T07:11:52","modified_gmt":"2020-10-29T07:11:52","slug":"patients-with-worst-covid-19-may-be-best-plasma-donors-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=26724","title":{"rendered":"Patients With Worst COVID-19 May Be Best Plasma Donors: Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"News_list_rdr art\">\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h3>Latest Prevention &amp; Wellness News<\/h3>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: Patients With Worst COVID-19 May Be Best Plasma Donors: Study\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/media.healthday.com\/Images\/icimages\/hospital_bed1022.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>TUESDAY, Oct. 27, 2020 (HealthDay News)<\/p>\n<p>Factors such as sex, age and severity of the disease may help identify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">COVID-19<\/a> survivors who have high levels of antibodies that can protect against the disease, a new study suggests.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These were significant patient characteristics that not only predicted the amount of antibody but the quality of that antibody,&#8221; said lead author Sabra Klein, a professor in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, older men who have recovered after a hospital stay for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_outbreak_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">COVID-19<\/a> may be good candidates for donating plasma for treating other infected patients, the study suggests.<\/p>\n<p>Plasma trials are continuing, but doctors are unsure how to select <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">COVID-19<\/a> survivors who are most likely to have strong antibody responses.<\/p>\n<p>For the study, researchers tested the blood of 126 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">COVID-19<\/a> survivors and found many differences in their antibody levels and their antibodies&#8217; ability to neutralize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/severe_acute_respiratory_syndrome_sars\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">SARS<\/a>-CoV-2. Factors linked with stronger antibody responses included being sick enough to be hospitalized, being older and being male.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know that the magnitude of antibody responses correlates with disease severity in other infectious diseases, such as active <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/tuberculosis_tb_facts\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">tuberculosis<\/a>,&#8221; Klein said in a Hopkins news release.<\/p>\n<p>The findings were recently published in the <i>Journal of Clinical Investigation<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Steven Reinberg<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2020 HealthDay.
