Ebel, D.O., from the VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System &amp; University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, and colleagues surveyed participants in the Veterans Affairs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/rheumatoid_arthritis_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">Rheumatoid Arthritis<\/a> Registry to examine occupational, agricultural, and military <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/prescription_drug_abuse_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">inhalant<\/a> exposures; questionnaires were returned by 797 participants. The associations between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/prescription_drug_abuse_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" rel=\"slide\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">inhalant<\/a> exposures and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/rheumatoid_arthritis_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">RA<\/a>-related factors were examined.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that independent of other factors, veterans exposed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/burn_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">burn<\/a> pits and military waste disposal more often had anti-CCP positivity (odds ratios, 1.66 and 1.74, respectively). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/burns\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">Burn<\/a> pit and military waste disposal exposures were numerically more strongly associated with anti-CCP positivity among those positive for HLA-DRB1 shared epitope status (odds ratios, 5.69 and 5.05, respectively). There were associations noted for several inhalant exposures with the presence of chronic lung disease, but not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/rheumatoid_factor\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"proc\">rheumatoid factor<\/a> or disease activity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These findings support emerging evidence that various inhalant exposures may contribute to the generation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/rheumatoid_arthritis_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">RA<\/a> autoantibodies such as anti-citrullinated protein antibodies,&#8221; the authors write. &#8220;Prospective cohort studies comprehensively evaluating the impact of inhalant exposures, including military <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/burn_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" rel=\"sym\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">burn<\/a> pits and waste disposal, and genetic risk factors on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/rheumatoid_arthritis_ra_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">RA<\/a> risk are needed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One author disclosed financial ties to Regeneron.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/art.41559\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Abstract\/Full Text (subscription or payment may be required)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Physician&#8217;s Briefing Staff<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2020 HealthDay.
