{"id":27509,"date":"2020-11-12T08:19:23","date_gmt":"2020-11-12T08:19:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=27509"},"modified":"2020-11-12T08:19:23","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T08:19:23","slug":"flu-vaccine-rates-low-in-young-adults-with-heart-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=27509","title":{"rendered":"Flu Vaccine Rates Low in Young Adults With Heart Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: Flu Vaccine Rates Low in Young Adults With Heart Disease\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/consumer.healthday.com\/media-library\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJpbWFnZSI6Imh0dHBzOi8vYXNzZXRzLnJibC5tcy8yMzYzMzcxMS9vcmlnaW4uanBnIiwiZXhwaXJlc19hdCI6MTYyNDM2OTAwNH0.IUmZ2WZikeXNar6tH9ir9p5Pn4upbsW5EKhDsYamiZs\/image.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>TUESDAY, Nov. 10, 2020 (HealthDay News)<\/p>\n<p>Among young adults with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_disease_coronary_artery_disease\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">heart disease<\/a>, less than 25% get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/flu_vaccination\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"proc\">flu shot<\/a>, a new study finds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Individuals with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_disease_pictures_slideshow_visual_guide\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">cardiovascular disease<\/a> are more likely to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/influenza\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">flu<\/a> than among those without any chronic health conditions,&#8221; said researcher Dr. Tarang Parekh, a Ph.D. candidate and assistant researcher at George Mason University College of Health and Human Services in Fairfax, Va.<\/p>\n<p>Getting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/flu_vaccination\/article.htm\" rel=\"proc\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">flu shot<\/a> could be especially important for people with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_how_the_heart_works\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">heart<\/a> trouble.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Having a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/influenza\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">flu<\/a> infection can exacerbate cardiovascular diseases like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_attack\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">heart attack<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/stroke_symptoms_and_treatment\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">stroke<\/a>, and can also lead to secondary infections such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/pneumonia_facts\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">pneumonia<\/a>. You are putting yourself at increased risk when you don&#8217;t get the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/flu_vaccination\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"proc\">flu vaccine<\/a>,&#8221; Parekh said.<\/p>\n<p>For the study, the researchers culled data on flu vaccination and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_disease_pictures_slideshow_visual_guide\/article.htm\" rel=\"slide\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">cardiovascular disease<\/a> from the 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.<\/p>\n<p>They found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only 20% of young adults aged 18 to 34 with a history of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_attack\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">heart attack<\/a> had a flu shot versus about 25% of those who never had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_how_the_heart_works\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">heart<\/a> attack but had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_disease_pictures_slideshow_visual_guide\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">heart disease<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Only about 22% of those aged 35 to 44 who had a heart attack had a flu shot, compared with about 28% of those who didn&#8217;t have a heart attack but had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_disease_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">heart disease<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Compared with younger adults, vaccination rates of those with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_disease_coronary_artery_disease\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">heart disease<\/a> were lower in older adults, 28% versus 26.7%, respectively.<\/li>\n<li>Younger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/stroke_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">stroke<\/a> survivors were more likely to be vaccinated: 27% of those aged 18 to 34, compared with 24% of those who never had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/stroke_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">stroke<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The findings will be presented Nov. 13-17 at the American Heart Association&#8217;s (AHA) virtual annual meeting. Such research is considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we look at our Healthy People 2020 goals, one major goal is to reach 70% of the population receiving the annual flu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/vaccination_faqs\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"proc\">vaccine<\/a>. However, we are not even at the halfway mark, especially when you consider that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/vaccination_faqs\/article.htm\" rel=\"proc\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">vaccine<\/a> rate among those with cardiovascular disease is significantly lower,&#8221; Parekh said in a meeting news release.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s essential that young adults with cardiovascular disease receive the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/flu_vaccination\/article.htm\" rel=\"proc\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">flu vaccine<\/a>.
