The new drug, mavacamten, improves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_how_the_heart_works\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">heart<\/a> structure, reduces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/joint_stiffness\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">stiffness<\/a> of the heart muscle and restores normal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_disease_pictures_slideshow_visual_guide\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">mitral valve<\/a> motion, researchers said. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_disease_pictures_slideshow_visual_guide\/article.htm\" rel=\"slide\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">mitral valve<\/a> separates the two chambers of the left side of the heart.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The use of mavacamten as a disease-specific therapy would be a significant advance in therapy for this population,&#8221; said lead researcher Dr. Sheila Hegde, a cardiovascular medicine specialist at Brigham and Women&#8217;s Hospital in Boston.<\/p>\n<p>But &#8220;it has not been approved yet, nor has it been compared to other treatments in a clinical study,&#8221; she noted.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the treatment for obstructive hypertrophic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/cardiomyopathy_dilated\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">cardiomyopathy<\/a> relies on relieving symptoms. In this phase 3 trial, mavacamten not only relieved symptoms, but helped improve the underlying causes of the condition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mavacamten is a first-in-class medication [myosin inhibitor] designed to target the heart muscle proteins that drive increased contractility in the heart, one of the hallmarks of patients with symptomatic hypertrophic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/cardiomyopathy_restrictive\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">cardiomyopathy<\/a>,&#8221; Hegde said.<\/p>\n<p>The trial was paid for by California-based MyoKardia Inc., the maker of mavacamten.<\/p>\n<p>About 1 in 500 people suffer from hypertrophic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/cardiomyopathy_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">cardiomyopathy<\/a>, which is caused by genes in heart muscle that cause the walls of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/image-collection\/heart_detail_picture\/picture.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"img\">left ventricle<\/a> (left lower chamber) to contract harder and thicken more than normal.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the wall between the chambers of the heart thicken, and the walls of the chamber that pumps blood become stiff.<\/p>\n<p>This thickening and stiffening can block or reduce the flow of blood from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/image-collection\/heart_detail_picture\/picture.htm\" rel=\"img\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">left ventricle<\/a> of the heart to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/image-collection\/aorta_picture\/picture.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"img\">aorta<\/a>, which sends blood throughout the body.<\/p>\n<p>Treatments for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/cardiomyopathy_hypertrophic\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">hypertrophic cardiomyopathy<\/a> focus on relieving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/chest_pain\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">chest pain<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/shortness_of_breath\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">shortness of breath<\/a> (especially with physical exertion), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/fatigue\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">fatigue<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/heart_rhythm_disorders\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">abnormal heart rhythms<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/dizziness_dizzy\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">dizziness<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/fainting\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">fainting<\/a> and swelling in the ankles, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/feet_facts_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">feet<\/a>, legs, abdomen and veins in the neck.<\/p>\n<p>This latest trial pitted mavacamten against a placebo in 244 patients, average age 58.<\/p>\n<p>After 30 weeks, those taking the drug had significant improvement in blood flow through the heart, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/exercise\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">exercise<\/a> capacity and symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since mavacamten has only been studied in patients in the phase 3 study for 30 weeks, there is an ongoing long-term extension study to help provide further details on the long-term impact on heart structure and function,&#8221; Hegde said.<\/p>\n<p>The findings were scheduled to be presented Nov. 13-17 at the American Heart Association&#8217;s virtual annual meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Gregg Fonarow, interim chief of the division of cardiology at the University of California, Los Angeles, said that hypertrophic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/cardiomyopathy_hypertrophic\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">cardiomyopathy<\/a> results in substantial morbidity and is challenging to manage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Despite currently available medications, many patients have functional limitations and disabling symptoms,&#8221;
