{"id":28305,"date":"2020-11-26T09:01:45","date_gmt":"2020-11-26T09:01:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=28305"},"modified":"2020-11-26T09:01:45","modified_gmt":"2020-11-26T09:01:45","slug":"fauci-people-should-feel-confident-about-covid-vaccines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=28305","title":{"rendered":"Fauci: &#8216;People Should Feel Confident&#8217; About COVID Vaccines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: Fauci: 'People Should Feel Confident' New COVID Vaccines Safe, Effective\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/consumer.healthday.com\/media-library\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJpbWFnZSI6Imh0dHBzOi8vYXNzZXRzLnJibC5tcy8yNDgwNzUxMy9vcmlnaW4ucG5nIiwiZXhwaXJlc19hdCI6MTYyNjE2NjA4NH0.f75YS-boPGlWAfDWRh5RuEB2fowoTLycyuiQTgfO1wQ\/image.png\"\/>By Ernie Mundell HealthDay Reporter<\/p>\n<p>WEDNESDAY, Nov 25, 2020<\/p>\n<p>The turnaround time &#8212; from the emergence of the new coronavirus to the advent of multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/immunizations\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"proc\">vaccines<\/a> to prevent it &#8212; has been nothing short of &#8220;breathtaking,&#8221; said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation&#8217;s leading expert on infectious disease.<\/p>\n<p>Still, many Americans are still uncertain about getting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">COVID-19<\/a> shot.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dr Anthony Fauci Discusses Pandemic on HD Live!\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HkobOAfPTi0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Thursday with <a href=\"https:\/\/live.healthday.com\/hd-live-dr-anthony-fauci-interview-2649020923.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HD Live!<\/a>, Fauci said &#8220;it&#8217;s understandable that people might be concerned when there&#8217;s something new that&#8217;s put in front of them.&#8221; Especially when initial projections had the approval of the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_outbreak_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">COVID-19<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/vaccination_faqs\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"proc\">vaccine<\/a> taking at least 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>But that was then, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People need to understand that the speed of [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/vaccination_faqs\/article.htm\" rel=\"proc\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">vaccine<\/a> development] is a reflection of the extraordinarily exquisite \u2014 breathtaking in some respects \u2014 advances in science which are allowing us to do things in weeks to months that formerly took years,&#8221; Fauci explained. &#8220;<em>Without<\/em> compromising safety and without compromising scientific integrity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Currently, pharmaceutical companies Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca have all presented trial data on their respective vaccine candidates that shows each to be highly effective and safe.<\/p>\n<p>In trials involving tens of thousands of volunteers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/vaccination_faqs\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"proc\">vaccines<\/a> from the first two companies have demonstrated about 95% effectiveness in preventing infection \u2014 a rate that exceeded most experts&#8217; expectations. The AstraZeneca vaccine has shown an effectiveness of between 70% to 90%, depending on the regimen used.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Umbrella of protection&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite this good news, poll after poll shows many Americans still distrustful of any vaccine developed in so short a time.<\/p>\n<p>One <em>CNN<\/em> poll, taken early last month, found just 51% of Americans saying they&#8217;d get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov_symptoms_and_signs\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">COVID-19<\/a> vaccine should one arrive.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s disheartening, since it would take &#8220;somewhere between 75% and 80% of the people to get vaccinated in order to get a real umbrella of protection over the community \u2014 the &#8216;community&#8217; being the United States of America,&#8221; Fauci said. &#8220;When you get that much protection, the virus really has no place to go.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fauci, who directs the U.S. National Institute of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/allergy\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">Allergy<\/a> and Infectious Diseases, believes many Americans may simply be unaware of the rigorous science involved in vetting a vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Perhaps because of the divisiveness in our society, and mixed signals that we might get from Washington,&#8221; many people still worry about oversight, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Those worries are unfounded, Fauci stressed. That&#8217;s because the process of vaccine approval has always been kept separate from either the pressures of politicians or the financial incentives of industry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are so many levels of independence and transparency there that people should feel confident \u2014 I do \u2014 that the vaccine is determined to be safe and effective,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Crushing the outbreak&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First and foremost, he said, Americans need to know that the results of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/clinical_trials\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"proc\">clinical trials<\/a> into a candidate vaccine are scrutinized by career scientists placed on longstanding committees at both the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/prevention\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">Prevention<\/a> and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.<\/p>\n<p>At that point, the vaccine maker &#8220;is not involved in this \u2014 you separate them so that the Data and Safety Monitoring Board does [its review] independently,&#8221; Fauci said.<\/p>\n<p>Only after committees from both the FDA and CDC confer and agree on the data would FDA officials decide that &#8220;&#8216;we&#8217;re going to do an EUA&#8217; \u2014 we are going to have an Emergency Use Authorization,&#8221; Fauci explained.<\/p>\n<p>As soon as that EUA is issued, another independent expert committee \u2014 this time at the CDC \u2014 &#8220;makes a determination of how you are going to distribute the vaccine,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>The final and perhaps most crucial step: Convincing hundreds of millions of Americans, and billions elsewhere around the world, to get immunized against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">COVID-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>How soon might that process begin?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know that we are going to start getting doses of vaccine towards the middle and end of December to the higher-risk groups,&#8221; Fauci said. &#8220;As we get into the first quarter of 2021, January, February, March, more and more people will get vaccinated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hopefully that can get done worldwide so that we globally crush this outbreak,&#8221; Fauci said.<\/p>\n<p>                            <a class=\"mediaPrmo ss\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/pertussis_and_whooping_cough_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('ssprmo-arttop');\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#13;<br \/>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/\/images\/slideshow\/pertussis-whooping-cough-s1-girl-cough-in-bed.jpg\"\/><span class=\"skew\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\n    <span class=\"icon-slideshow\"\/>&#13;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"label\">SLIDESHOW<\/h4>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n    <span class=\"caption\">Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Symptoms, Vaccine Facts<\/span>&#13;<br \/>\n    <span class=\"btn\">See Slideshow<\/span>&#13;<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>He said that when his turn comes, &#8220;I will take the vaccine.
