Elaine Thompson-Herah confirmed her place among the pantheon of sprint greats as she secured an unprecedented women’s 100m-200m double-double with a sensational victory over the longer distance in Tokyo.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 29-year-old Jamaican surged home in 21.53 seconds, just 0.19 seconds off Florence Griffith-Joyner’s long-standing world record, to back up her individual golds from Rio 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It is the second-fastest time in history. <\/span><\/p>\n

Trailing in her draught, Namibian teenager Christine Mboma, who was barred from her favoured 400m two weeks before the Games on account of her naturally high testosterone levels, took silver in 21.81.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gabrielle Thomas, the American champion, took bronze in 21.87.<\/span><\/p>\n

Griffith-Joyner’s 21.34-second mark, set in the final of the 1988 Games in Seoul, has long seemed unassailable. But Thomas’ 21.61 run in the US trials in June and Thompson-Herah, who became the second-fastest woman of all time over 100m on Saturday, have brought it back into view with the help of a high-tech track and carbon-stiffened spikes.<\/span><\/p>\n

It may yet be Mboma who could finally claim the record however. Having only turned 18 in May, the Namibian had run only one 200m before this season, a pedestrian 25.05. But her awesome finishing speed swallowed up Jamaican great Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and several others over the final 50m.<\/span><\/p>\n

Work on her start and the new experience of running the bend could quickly bring her time lower quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thompson-Herah, Fraser-Pryce and 100m bronze medallist Shericka Jackson will attempt to make sure Jamaica go one better than their 4x100m silver from Rio in Friday’s relay final.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before Thompson-Herah’s victory, <\/span>British teenager Keely Hodgkinson took 800m silver,<\/span><\/a> shattering Kelly Holmes’ 26-year-old British record with a tactically impeccable 1:55.88 run. <\/span><\/p>\n

Fellow 19-year-old Athing Mu of the United States took gold, although Jemma Reekie was edged out for bronze by fast-finishing American Raevyn Rogers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Armand Duplantis won the first of what will surely be a clutch of global titles as he left the field behind in the pole vault.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 21-year-old Swede had to switch to chasing himself and history by the end of the competition. After becoming the only man to clear 6.02m, he raised the bar to 6.19m, narrowly failing in an attempt to improve on the world record he set in Glasgow last year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Britain’s Harry Coppell finished seventh with a best of 5.80m.<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier in the evening in Tokyo, Britons <\/span>Andrew Pozzi<\/strong> and <\/span>David King<\/strong> progressed to the 110m hurdles semi-finals in times of 13.50 and 13.55 seconds respectively. Jamaica’s defending champion Omar McLeod failed to make the Jamaica team for Tokyo, and world silver medallist Sergey Shubenkov and Rio silver medallist Orlando Ortega are now also out of contention after pulling out of the heats.<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrew Butchart<\/strong> finished seventh in his 5,000m heat but advanced to Friday’s final via his 13:31.23 time. <\/span>Marc Scott<\/strong> finishing two tenths of a second off fourth and an automatic spot in the final, but was eliminated with his 13:39.61 not matching the pace set in the other heat. <\/span><\/p>\n

Scott Lincoln<\/strong> fell short of the shot put final with a best of 20.42m failing to make the grade.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seventeen-year-old American Erriyon Knighton, who broke Jamaican great Usain Bolt’s under-18 world record in June, put in a hugely impressive performance in the first 200m semi-final with an assured 20.02-second victory.<\/span><\/p>\n

World champion Noah Lyles almost paid for his complacency, having to rely on a fastest loser spot after clocking 19.99 and third place as he slowed before the line. Canada’s Andre de Grasse, who won 100m bronze on Sunday, was fastest into Wednesday’s final with a personal best of 19.73.<\/span><\/p>\n

Britons Adam Gemili and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake failed to advance from the heats earlier in the day.<\/span><\/p>\n
