The USA’s Sydney McLaughlin smashed her own world record with a thrilling run as she took Olympic gold in the women’s 400m hurdles at the Tokyo Games.<\/span><\/p>\n

McLaughlin, 21, stormed to victory in a time of 51.46 seconds – beating her previous best of 51.90 – to pip fellow American Dalilah Muhammad.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“I can’t really get it straight in my head yet. I’m sure I’ll process it and celebrate later,” said McLaughlin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Japan’s Kokona Hiraki, 12, won a silver medal in skateboarding.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hiraki, the youngest Olympic medallist since French rowing cox Noel Vandernotte in 1936, finished behind 19-year-old Sakura Yosozumi as Japan finished first and second in the women’s park skateboarding final.<\/span><\/p>\n

Canada’s Andre de Grasse, whose career stalled because of injury after winning three medals at Rio, won 200m gold in a time of 19:62. <\/span><\/p>\n

It was his second medal of the Tokyo Olympics after winning bronze in the 100m.<\/span><\/p>\n

Brazil’s Ana Marcela Cunha, who coloured her hair in her country’s colours, won gold in the women’s 10km marathon swimming race, while Matthew Belcher and Will Ryan of Australia took gold in the men’s 470 sailing class.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Netherlands will play in the women’s Olympic hockey final for a fifth straight time <\/span>after a convincing 5-1 win<\/span><\/a> over defending champions Great Britain. They will face Argentina, who beat India 2-1.<\/span><\/p>\n

McLaughlin wins thrilling final<\/h3>\n

Nicknamed ‘Syd the Kid’, McLaughlin fell ill on the flight to her maiden Olympics in Rio and failed to make the final five years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Wednesday, she triumphed in one of the most the most highly anticipated races of the athletics programme in Tokyo against 2016 Olympic champion Muhammad.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before the final, McLaughlin said of her rivalry with Muhammad: “Iron sharpens iron. People can call it whatever they want to call it; it’s two great athletes pushing each other to be better. <\/span><\/p>\n

“There’s no animosity or hard feelings. It’s just two people trying to be their best. Dalilah is a great competitor.”<\/span><\/p>\n

McLaughlin trailed Muhammad coming off the last hurdle but carried the momentum into the sprint to the line <\/span>to cross first.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Muhammad also finished inside the old world record in 51:58 while Femke Bol of the Netherlands claimed bronze in a time of 52:03.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I’m just grateful to be out here celebrating that extraordinary race and representing my country,” said McLaughlin. “I saw Dalilah ahead of me with one to go. I just thought, ‘run your race’.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The race doesn’t really start until hurdle seven. I just wanted to go out there and give it everything I had.”<\/span><\/p>\n

A podium with a combined age of 44<\/h3>\n

Skateboarding is making its Olympics debut and Japan have enjoyed great success in the sport, having won three medals in Tokyo already before Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

That tally is now five after the efforts of Yosozumi and Hiraki.<\/span><\/p>\n

With Great Britain’s 13-year-old <\/span>Sky Brown clinching bronze<\/span><\/a>, the combined age on the podium was just 44.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I hope skateboarding is going to be very popular in Japan because of the strong performances of the Japanese team,” said Yosozumi, who landed two 540s to earn the highest score of 60.09.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Now I want to go back home and eat some delicious food.”<\/span><\/p>\n

At the age of 12, Hiraki is used to making history. <\/span><\/p>\n

She became the youngest female competitor at an X Games when she competed in the 2019 edition aged just 10. <\/span><\/p>\n

Hiraki, who finished with a score of 58:05, is the world number six and won the Japanese national title earlier this year – no mean feat given athletes from Japan fill four of the top seven spots in the world rankings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cuba win boxing gold<\/h3>\n

Cuba’s Arlen Lopez won his second Olympic title after he outwitted Britain’s Ben Whittaker in the light-heavyweight final.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lopez, the middleweight champion at Rio, arrived at his post-fight news conference holding his phone and smiling, mid-call to family back home.<\/span><\/p>\n

“They were very happy obviously,” he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Top seeds Buse Naz Cakiroglu and Busenaz Surmeneli won their semi-final bouts to give Turkey a shot at a first-ever women’s Olympic boxing gold.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai won the women’s 3,000m steeplechase gold medal. The 22-year-old’s triumph was only the third Olympic gold won by Uganda in any sport.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was a Kenya one-two in the men’s 800m final, with Emmanuel Korir taking gold and compatriot Ferguson Rotich winning silver.<\/span><\/p>\n

Filippo Ganna inspired Italy to gold in the men’s team pursuit cycling final. The Azzurri trailed to Denmark in the closing stages of the 16-lap duel but Ganna turned up the power and they blasted across the line in a world record 3:42.032.<\/span><\/p>\n

Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki won the men’s hammer throw with a personal best of 82.52m, while Georgia’s Lasha Talakhadze broke his own world record to win the gold medal in the men’s +109 kg weightlifting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Talakhadze, 27, lifted a total of 488kg to improve the record of 485kg he set earlier this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
