MONDAY, July 6, 2020 (HealthDay News) — Decades of progress against HIV<\/a>, tuberculosis<\/a>, malaria<\/a> and other diseases worldwide are threatened by the diversion of resources on the coronavirus pandemic, the International AIDS<\/a> Society says in a report to be published this week.<\/p>\n “The social distancing efforts and lockdowns to control the spread of it [coronavirus], have disrupted HIV<\/a> prevention<\/a> and treatment programs and put vital HIV<\/a> research on hold,” Dr. Anton Pozniak, president of the International AIDS<\/a> Society, said last week, CNN<\/i> reported.<\/p>\n The society will outline its concerns during 23rd International AIDS<\/a> conference, which began Monday.<\/p>\n A survey released in June by the Global Fund to fight AIDS<\/a>, Tuberculosis<\/a> and Malaria<\/a> found that among the 106 countries the international financing nongovernmental organization works in, 85% had disruptions to HIV<\/a> services, 78% to TB<\/a> services, and 73% to malaria<\/a> services, and nearly 20% had major disruptions in services for all three diseases, CNN<\/i> reported.<\/p>\n These disruptions could result in more than 1 million extra deaths due to the three diseases, according to models by the World Health Organization, Imperial College London and Stop TB<\/a> partnership.<\/p>\n <\/p><\/div>\n![\"MedicalNews\"](\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\")
