Both found there are still not enough antibacterial treatments in clinical development worldwide to fight the growing threat of drug-resistant bacterial infections.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" sf-custom-thumbnail=\"true\" src=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/images\/default-source\/wpro\/countries\/viet-nam\/health-topics\/thuoc-thiet-yeu.jpg?sfvrsn=a0b4a101_34\" style=\"float:right;\" sf-size=\"122372\" width=\"300\" alt=\"Essential medicines\" class=\"-align-right\" sf-constrain-proportions=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Developing new, innovative antibiotics is resource-intensive and scientifically difficult. And, when more antibiotics are used the less effective they become, hence new antibiotics are often held in reserve to help preserve their potency. This is good for public health, but results in relatively low potential sales volume, making it challenging for companies to recoup their investment. As a result, major pharmaceutical companies have backed away from antibiotic development. The remaining small companies <a data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ir.tphase.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/melinta-therapeutics-acquire-tetraphase-pharmaceuticals\">struggle<\/a> to <a data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercebiotech.com\/biotech\/melinta-files-for-bankruptcy-another-dark-day-for-antibiotics\">sustain<\/a> their operations \u2013 with many <a data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cidrap.umn.edu\/news-perspective\/2019\/04\/achaogen-bankruptcy-raises-worry-over-antibiotic-pipeline\">facing bankruptcy even after successfully bringing a new antibiotic to market<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Almost all antibiotics in our arsenal today are based on discoveries from more than 35 years ago. And <a data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/articles\/2016\/12\/tracking-the-pipeline-of-antibiotics-in-development\">only about 1 in 4<\/a> candidates currently in the development pipeline represent the truly new types of drugs needed to overcome resistance. Even more problematic is that historical data suggest that many candidates will fail in clinical trials, with just a small fraction obtaining regulatory approval.<\/p>\n<p><a data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/articles\/2020\/04\/15\/the-invaluable-role-of-antibiotics-in-a-pandemic-and-beyond\" style=\"text-align:inherit;text-transform:inherit;white-space:inherit;word-spacing:normal;\">COVID-19 has so poignantly reminded us<\/a><span style=\"background-color:transparent;text-align:inherit;text-transform:inherit;white-space:inherit;word-spacing:normal;caret-color:auto;\"> that we need to build more resilient health systems that include access to effective antibiotics to better tackle future outbreaks. Antibiotic resistance is a looming public health crisis also requiring improved preparedness, including a robust clinical antibacterial development pipeline.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Pew and WHO ask the following of policymakers, pharmaceutical companies, research funders and antibiotic innovation stakeholders: <\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong style=\"background-color:transparent;text-align:inherit;text-transform:inherit;white-space:inherit;word-spacing:normal;caret-color:auto;font-size:inherit;\">Increase public funding for early-stage research for innovative antibiotics<\/strong><span style=\"background-color:transparent;font-family:inherit;text-align:inherit;text-transform:inherit;white-space:inherit;word-spacing:normal;caret-color:auto;font-size:inherit;\"> to overcome the basic scientific challenges of antibiotic discovery.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ensure promising antibiotics successfully move through clinical development <\/strong>by increasing \u00a0push and pull incentives &#8211; this includes public-private partnerships such as <a data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/carb-x.org\/\">CARB-X<\/a> and <a data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/gardp.org\/\">GARDP<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Identify innovative solutions for sufficient return on investment for new antibiotics while ensuring their appropriate use. <\/strong>This could include different reimbursement and procurement models to facilitate bringing urgently needed antibiotics to market.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These efforts must be robust and sustained in order to stabilize and revitalize the broken antibiotic development pipeline and market. As the threat of antibiotic resistance continues to grow, novel antibiotics are needed urgently \u2013 now more than ever.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" sf-custom-thumbnail=\"true\" src=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/images\/default-source\/campaigns\/world-antibiotic-awareness-week\/who-antimicrobials-hwc-round-logo3ea9c482a08e422f91d21d5f4135c4f3.jpg?sfvrsn=8327865e_0\" sf-size=\"1183367\" width=\"200\" alt=\"WHO_Antimicrobials_HWC_round_logo\" sf-constrain-proportions=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/antimicrobial-resistance\">WHO<\/a>\u00a0is committed to shaping the public health R&amp;D priority setting agenda to combat antimicrobial resistance and will continue to review the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/antibacterial-agents-in-preclinical-development-an-open-access-database\">\u00a0preclinical<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/2019-antibacterial-agents-in-clinical-development-an-analysis-of-the-antibacterial-clinical-development-pipeline\">clinical<\/a>\u00a0antibacterial pipeline on an annual basis as well as expanding to fungal pathogens of public health importance.<\/p>\n<p>The<em style=\"background-color:transparent;text-align:inherit;text-transform:inherit;white-space:inherit;word-spacing:normal;caret-color:auto;\">\u00a0<\/em><a data-sf-ec-immutable=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/\" style=\"text-align:inherit;text-transform:inherit;white-space:inherit;word-spacing:normal;\">Pew Charitable Trusts<\/a><em style=\"background-color:transparent;text-align:inherit;text-transform:inherit;white-space:inherit;word-spacing:normal;caret-color:auto;\">\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"background-color:transparent;text-align:inherit;text-transform:inherit;white-space:inherit;word-spacing:normal;caret-color:auto;\">tracks the global antibiotic pipeline to shed light on the status of antibiotic development, to evaluate and advocate for public policies, and to bring researchers together to spur new drug discovery.
