Participants were from eight European countries and part of a long-term <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/cancer\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">cancer<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/nutrition\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sub\">nutrition<\/a> study.<\/p>\n<p>After adjusting for lifestyle, and social and dietary risk factors for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/diabetes_mellitus\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">diabetes<\/a>, people with the highest levels of fruit and vegetable consumption were 50% less likely to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/type_2_diabetes_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">diabetes<\/a> than those with the lowest levels, the researchers found.<\/p>\n<p>Every 66 grams a day (2.3 ounces) increase in total fruit and vegetable intake was associated with a 25% lower risk of developing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/type_2_diabetes\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">type 2 diabetes<\/a>, Nita Forouhi, of the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, and colleagues calculated.<\/p>\n<p>The other study included more than 158,000 U.S. women and over 36,000 U.S. men.<\/p>\n<p>After adjusting for lifestyle and dietary risk factors for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/diabetes_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">diabetes<\/a>, people with the highest levels of whole grain consumption had a 29% lower rate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/type_2_diabetes\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">type 2 diabetes<\/a> than those with the lowest levels, the findings showed.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of specific whole grain foods, one or more servings a day of whole grain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/common_cold\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">cold<\/a> breakfast cereal or dark bread was associated with a lower risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/type_2_diabetes_pictures_slideshow\/article.htm\" rel=\"slide\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">type 2 diabetes<\/a> (19% and 21%, respectively) compared with less than one serving a month.<\/p>\n<p>Two or more servings a week compared with less than one serving a month was associated with a 21% lower risk for oatmeal, a 15% lower risk for added bran, and a 12% lower risk for brown rice and wheat germ.<\/p>\n<p>The reductions in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/diabetes_mellitus\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">diabetes<\/a> risk appeared to plateau at around two servings a day for total whole grain intake, and at around half a serving a day for whole grain cereal and dark bread, according to Qi Sun, an associate professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/diet_and_nutrition_quiz\/quiz.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"quiz\">nutrition<\/a> at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, and colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>The studies can&#8217;t prove cause and effect.
