{"id":6645,"date":"2020-07-16T12:54:27","date_gmt":"2020-07-16T12:54:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=6645"},"modified":"2020-07-16T12:54:27","modified_gmt":"2020-07-16T12:54:27","slug":"layoffs-cost-5-4-million-americans-their-health-insurance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=6645","title":{"rendered":"Layoffs Cost 5.4 Million Americans Their Health Insurance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"News_list_rdr art\">\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h3>Latest Prevention &amp; Wellness News<\/h3>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>WEDNESDAY, July 15, 2020 (HealthDay News) &#8212; About 5.4 million Americans lost their health insurance after being laid off between February and May due to the coronavirus pandemic, a new study shows.<\/p>\n<p>The number of adults who lost coverage due to unemployment over those months is higher than have ever lost insurance in a single year, <i>The New York Times<\/i> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The increase in uninsured laid-off workers during the study period was nearly 40% higher than the highest previous increase of 3.9 million, which occurred during the 2008-09 recession, according to the study from the nonpartisan consumer advocacy group Families U.S.A.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly half (46%) were in five states: California, Texas, Florida, New York, and North Carolina, the <i>Times<\/i> reported.<\/p>\n<p>In the 13 states that didn&#8217;t expand Medicaid &#8212; including Texas, Florida and North Carolina &#8212; 43% of laid off workers became uninsured, nearly double the rate of 23% in states that did expand Medicaid.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We knew these numbers would be big,&#8221; Stan Dorn, one of the study authors and director of Families USA&#8217;s National Center for Coverage Innovation, told the <i>Times<\/i>. &#8220;This is the worst economic downturn since World War II. It dwarfs the Great Recession. So, it&#8217;s not surprising that we would also see the worst increase in the uninsured.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2019 HealthDay.
