{"id":6791,"date":"2020-07-17T05:32:44","date_gmt":"2020-07-17T05:32:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=6791"},"modified":"2020-07-17T05:32:44","modified_gmt":"2020-07-17T05:32:44","slug":"record-number-of-overdose-deaths-in-u-s-last-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=6791","title":{"rendered":"Record Number of Overdose Deaths in U.S. Last Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"News_list_rdr art\">\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h3>Latest Mental Health News<\/h3>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>THURSDAY, July 16, 2020 (HealthDay News) &#8212; The U.S. reached a grim record last year with nearly 71,000 drug overdose deaths, the Centers for Disease Control and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/prevention\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">Prevention<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<p>The preliminary numbers on death tolls show that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/fentanyl_transdermal_system\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"pharm\">fentanyl<\/a> and similar synthetic opioids accounted for 36,500 overdose deaths, and that deaths involving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/cocaine_and_crack_abuse\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">cocaine<\/a> and methamphetamine are also on the rise, the <i>Associated Press<\/i> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The data show &#8220;a very disturbing trend,&#8221; Assistant Secretary for Health Adm. Brett Giroir said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We understand that there is an extraordinary amount of work to do, especially now as we are also dealing with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">COVID-19<\/a> pandemic that could markedly affect our nation&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/mental_health_psychology\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">mental health<\/a> and risk of substance use,&#8221; Giroir said in a statement, the <i>AP<\/i> reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"credits\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MedicalNews\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicinenet.com\/images\/HealthDay\/healthday.png\" style=\"border: none;\"\/><br \/>Copyright \u00a9 2019 HealthDay.
