{"id":7096,"date":"2020-07-18T08:20:56","date_gmt":"2020-07-18T08:20:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=7096"},"modified":"2020-07-18T08:20:56","modified_gmt":"2020-07-18T08:20:56","slug":"placenta-may-help-shield-fetus-from-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bengalnewstimes.com\/?p=7096","title":{"rendered":"Placenta May Help Shield Fetus From COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>                            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"News Picture: Placenta May Help Shield Fetus From COVID-19\" class=\"healthday_image\" src=\"https:\/\/media.healthday.com\/Images\/icimages\/18212.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>FRIDAY, July 17, 2020 (HealthDay News)<\/p>\n<p>Some key molecules used by the new coronavirus to cause infection aren&#8217;t found in the placenta, which may explain why the virus is rarely detected in fetuses or newborns of women with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">COVID-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. government researchers found that placental membranes lack the messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule required to make the ACE2 receptor. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/severe_acute_respiratory_syndrome_sars\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">SARS<\/a>-CoV-2 &#8212; the virus that causes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/wuhan_coronavirus_outbreak_2019-ncov\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"slide\">COVID-19<\/a> &#8212; uses that cell surface receptor to cause infection.<\/p>\n<p>These placental tissues also lack mRNA needed to make an enzyme that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/severe_acute_respiratory_syndrome_symptoms\/symptoms.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"sym\">SARS<\/a>-CoV-2 uses to invade a cell, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) researchers found.<\/p>\n<p>However, the placenta does have molecules that previous research has suggested may be potential routes for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/severe_acute_respiratory_syndrome_sars\/article.htm\" rel=\"dt\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\">SARS<\/a>-CoV-2 infection, the findings showed. Those molecules include the CD147 receptor and the enzymes cathepsin L and Furin.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers also found that placental and membrane tissue have a type of immune cell (macrophage) with the critical cell surface receptor. But there&#8217;s little evidence the new coronavirus could spread to the placenta, membranes and fetus in a normal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/pregnancy_planning_preparing_for_pregnancy\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">pregnancy<\/a>, they said in an NIH news release.<\/p>\n<p>The investigators also found that the placenta contains many receptors used for infection by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/zika_virus\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">Zika virus<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/cytomegalovirus_cmv\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">cytomegalovirus<\/a>. Both pose serious health risks when passed from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicinenet.com\/pregnancy\/article.htm\" onclick=\"wmdTrack('embd-lnk');\" rel=\"dt\">pregnant<\/a> woman to her fetus.<\/p>\n<p>The findings were published online July 14 in the journal <i>eLife<\/i>.
