There is no doubt that the unrest is the biggest security challenge that Mr Ramaphosa has faced since he became president in 2019, and it is bound to worsen the economic crisis, already hit by the Covid pandemic, as many businesses have been destroyed. Supermarkets, pharmacies, furniture and clothing stores are among those that have been ransacked or set ablaze.
