KOLKATA: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday urged people to stay alert, saying experts predict Covid infection to peak in the next two months. The CM’s words of caution came during the announcement of the state cabinet’s decision to salute Covid warriors who have died in the line of duty by providing a job to a family member. Their families will also receive a compensation of Rs 10 lakh. The government will pay Rs 1 lakh to the Covid Warriors — doctors, nurses, policemen, cleaning and conservancy staff and government — who have tested positive but recovered.
“In these two months, the contamination will be at its peak, as per the experts. Figures are rising in all places. Bengal is a big state. Kolkata is a congested city, so we need to be cautious,” the CM said. She added that the number of tests will be increased to control the infection and asked all to cooperate.
Speaking to reporters in Nabanna, she said, Covid warriors at the frontline will be honoured with a medal and a certificate for their services to society. In the districts, doctors, nurses and some other health workers were awarded the medals on Wednesday. Private sector health workers, including doctors and nurses, would also receive medals and certificates for their service to Covid patients as a token of appreciation.
