KOLKATA: Cops probing into a two-year-old housing loan fraud arrested three persons, including one of the key fraudsters on Wednesday evening. They were arrested from Howrah, Bali and Bhadreshwar, and produced before a Salt Lake court.
Officers of Bidhannagar Police cyber crime department said that on December 2018, a senior official of a nationalized bank in New Town had lodged a complaint about borrowers, who had taken housing loan amounting to several crores, but were not repaying EMIs. Later, an internal investigation found out that the borrowers as bogus.
“Probing into the complaint, we finally trailed the key fraudsters – Ratul Patra and arrested him from Howrah. He gave away the names of two of his associates, Priyanka Saha and Sandipan Majumder. Both of them were arrested,” said a senior officer of the commissionrate.
Explaining the modus operandi, the officer said the men used to get hold of Aadhaar card and voter card of some persons and then forged them by printing their own photos on them. Then they used them to open bank accounts under the new identities and then apply for bank loans. The officer said they are also probing into the role of some bank employees.
