The number of COVID-19 patients is on a rise in the country as on Friday, India became the fourth nation to touch the 3,00,000 mark. At present, India has more than 1,30,000 active cases of coronavirus positive patients while over 1,60,000 patients have been cured. But the rate at which the cases are increasing is a big worry for both central and state governments. Delhi, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have, so far, emerged as the worst-hit states.
West Bengal, which had been able to contain the spread of the virus, is now emerging as one of the worst-hit states. Recently, the state saw a spike in the number of COVID-19 patients and touched the mark of 10,000. This has also resulted in an increase in the number of containment zones in the state, especially Kolkata.
As per the latest reports, there are more than 1800 containment zones in West Bengal. Kolkata has emerged as the worst-affected area as the containment zones there shot up to 1000.
It is to be noted that West Bengal had 480 containment zones on Monday earlier this week but the recent spike has seen the number going up. As per the latest numbers, a total of 463 people have lost their lives due to coronavirus in West Bengal. On Saturday, 12 people died due to COVID-19 – four were from Kolkata. The West Bengal government had already extended the lockdown till June 30.
Meanwhile, the temples in Kolkata are all set to reopen soon. Dakshineshwar Kali Temple has already reopened while Kalighat temple is likely to open next week.
Under the latest guidelines of the Central Government, the public places like malls, religious places were allowed to reopen from June 8. A number of states followed the guidelines while a few states decided against it due to the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases.
